In the golden age of professional wrestling, he was the most famous wrestler of them all. But George Hackenschmidt (1877-1968), aka “The Russian Lion,” was much more than that. A body builder, weightlifting champion, nutritionist, philosopher, and writer, he has been described by Terry Todd as “the outlier’s outlier,” and his story makes a worthy entry as Chapter 3 of the Rogue Legends Series.

Idk about the crooked ref in the Gotch matches. Never heard of that until this video. Also don't forget Gotch died like 6 years after the rematch. Hack had literal decades to tell his side of the story
His training method in "The way to live", using dumbbells and barbells, is actually based on principles such as progressive overload or range of 5 to 15 repetitions per set that we still use today exactly the same way.
How do you acquire that power.
hackenschmidt and gotch were the pinacle of professional wrestling and absolute legends in the industry along with many others such as farmer burns, Ed strangler Lewis and Lou Thesz
It is not honest to describe Him as an Estonian man, an average guy or a regular man. Yes, He spoke Estonian, He was there at the side of Amsterdam marathon race introducing Himself, when an Esthonian Lossmann almost did win the contest in 1920. His father was a German and mother an Estonian Swede. His mother had Estonian blood, thats true, but He was also a Saxon! I do not see how the monument project (?) is connected to His person or what He did in Life. It is an abstract Jumbo-Mumbo for Athletes. I want to see His steroidless upper body!
let's look at the facts here Hackenschimdt fought & lost to Gotch twice & both times he had an excuse the first time Gotch
cheated & the second time his knee was injured.. Give me a break what's next he'll blame the loss on a death of a family member.
…my dad (born 1918) had Hackenschmidt's book "The Way to Live" as a young boy…he gave it to me (born 1949) when I was a teenager (senioy ter in HS- 1967 – i FOLLOWED HIS REGIMEN FOR ABOUT A YEAR UNTIL AN OPERATION MADE ME STOP – NEVER RESUMED AFTRWARDS unfortunately…
Never wrestled Gama, did he ?
JESUS CHRIST IS COMING BACK PEOPLE REPENT OF YOUR SINS AND ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR TODAY NOT TOMORROW PEOPLE WHICH IS PROMISED TO NOONE ON THIS EARTH AT ALL
STOP IDOLIZING THIS MAN PEOPLE AND RUN TO JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH OUR SAVIOR AND KING THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN GET ANYONE OF US WHO BELIEVE IN HIM TO HEAVEN.
Catch used submissions to pin their opponents not tap them out. What were the rules for their first fight? Sure he probably cheated with the greasing but … 22;00
the second fight Gotch's boy may have jacked up Hacks knee in training and other rumor was something like they would each win one fall and the thrid I forgot but Gotch took him out fast instead.
Either way good doc.
I love the stories of these old strongmen before rules and regulations and steroids and equipped and unequipped and this and that, it’s so much more exciting hearing about some dude picking up a horse
He basically was Brock Lesnar's grandfather
can someone tell me the name of,
or where i could find the flier @0:43
LOOK AT THE MUSCULAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARITY
A black man representing France. The joke writes itself
Very interesting, Hackenschmidt was very power and strong man, and saved good shape in elder age , even after 80 he also realized as a writer , and philisofer , knew 6 languages
Thanks For Sharing This Video!
lol the one and only thing he's famous for is his disgraceful defeat when he wrestled against The great Gama. First day he passed hours in the doggy submission pose, getting thrown to the ground in a matter of seconds each time he would try to stand up. Second day he did not even come. So, not only a poor wrestler but also one without honor.
What’s with the ocarina and 4 piece band? Why is that a focal point?
In my opinion Hackenschmidt and Sandow had the best physiques of all time.
This is how wrestler should be. Not like those flip monkeys you see in WWE or AEW
Greetings from Tartu!
1898 we have him
1998 we have Goldberg
2-4 mins matches
I love how French Wrestling is called Greco-roman.
That’s actually my house in Nice
Thank you so much for it!
31:40, from what this video told us his shoulder and knee would disagree ^_^
The Russian Lion! I really enjoyed the connections made to athletes embracing heavy lifting.
I find it funny how at 5:43 all those were mentioned had german last names
how is this 3 years old and was never in my feed?
Who is the band at 2:50? What is the name of that kind of music?
Americans just suck, in any era!!lol gotch is a bastid.
I'm just here for David Webster!
There's a very strong flavour of Mick Jagger in these guy's posing routines.
Does someone know where to get access or buy the book ‘man and cosmic antagonism to mind and spirit’ written by George Hackenschmidt?

Hackenschmidt spent most of his life living in England, yet no mention of this.Seems very unusual not to even mention it..
So interesting thanks 🙏
