The Montreal Canadiens: Professional Hockey’s Bergevin

Bergevin (n) – A person or group of people whom repeatedly shoot their team’s in the foot with absolutely, inane decisions. Does not interefere when star players are being thrown under the bus. Very good looking French-Canadian. Prone to throwing the puck into their own net.

How to best describe the Canadiens: This is a bit of a tough situation. A team that should, for all intents and purposes, be a cup contender is mired in the doldrums of futility. The culprits can be identified pretty easily: Godawful management and organization-wide ego. Come and see for yourself how the Canadiens have pissed off their fans this time.

  1. 2020-21: The Canadiens make an exciting Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Finals before ultimately losing to the Lightning.

2021-22: The Stanley Cup run turns out to be a complete and total fluke. The Canadiens follow up their Cup Final appearance by not only becoming the worst team in the NHL, but are on pace to be one of the absolute WORST TEAMS OF ALL TIME, possibly in the conversation with the Senators and Sharks of the early 90s and the “We’re A Team” Senators. At least they’re not in 1974-75 Capitals territory? Regardless, Bergevin and the head coach are both fired in the middle of the season.

This video went from aging poorly to aging like wine.

  2. IN FAIRNESS: MY CSKA RED ARMY Taught Mr. Radulov well and has been nothing but a great example of sportsmanship and professionalism since his return, I will take him on my Devils anytime

  3. And now they pulled a 2002-03 Hurricanes and went from a Cup Finals appearance to dead last in the league (and becoming the 1st team in NHL history to finish 32nd). Yet Another Tree vid that ages like milk re-ages perfectly.

  4. Looking back at this video it’s hilarious how many people felt this video aged like milk. That team was so flawed and only made their Finals run thanks to playing in a weak All-Canada division. Their run to the Finals had “flash in the pan” written all over it, yet somehow Habs management thought they were the cream of the crop and acted that way heading into 2021-22.

Now, they’re back to picking up after a lot of bad contracts and playing horribly.

-Price isn’t even playing this season. 4+ years left on his contract with a no movement clause.
-Petry is becoming deadweight. Why Montreal signed a guy in his mid-30s for 4 more years with a modified NTC I won’t understand.
-Weber is likely not gonna play another game. This will hurt Nashville more when he inevitably retires but let’s not deny how much it’s holding back Montreal either.
-Lost Kotkaniemi to a goddamn offer sheet
-2 more years of Drouin. No, that contract will never be worth what Montreal gave up. Oh yeah, he’s injured too.
-Guys like Dvorak, Hoffman, Anderson, Armia, Edmundson, and Savard aren’t bad but are eating away at valuable cap space. They were signed in the hopes that Montreal would keep competing, not for whatever the hell is happening there right now.

The video has aged like wine.

  5. Funny. While Bergevin was GM in Montreal for nine seasons…the club finished FIRST in the division THREE times in nine seasons….that is more than Tampa Bay or Boston. They also made it to a conference final and a Stanley Cup final. Why didn't you mention the acquisitions Bergevin made like getting Danault for Weise and Fleischmann? How about about getting Petry for two draft picks? How about getting Byron off waivers? Edmundson for picks? Chiarot. Corey Perry. Caufield. Surprise surprise…a FRENCH Canadian got the most FIRST place votes in Jack Adams voting in 2020-2021. as a parting gift Bergevin left future management with a ton of draft picks in 2022. That must really piss you off Mr. Urinating Tree. This absurd video did not age well. Nice try though.

  6. Here after their Cinderella run. Great video Bergevin was a clown. You should make a video on the Rangers next. Long overdue.

  7. It's hilarous looking back at this and seeing how terribly this aged like usual for Tree. The trade for Weber turned out better for Montreal long-term then it did for Subban and Nashville, Beaulieu was nothing once he left Montreal, Shipachyev didn't pan out in the NHL, Radulov absolutely sucked after 2 years in Dallas, Drouin turned out to not be a dirty Russian (though we never did give him an actual goal-scorer to pass to, the thing we acquired him to do.)

Though fast-forwarding 5 years it's hilarious before he was fired how incredible Bergevin got. Trading Pacioretty for our current Captain and young 1st line Center, drafting Cole Caufield and Kaiden Guhle. Draft gems in RHP, Jake Evans, Sean Farrell, and Joshua Roy (hopefully 5 years down the line this comment hasn't aged terribly), signing Arber Xhekaj who's a current fan-favourite and possibly bottom pair mainstay for a long while as the last UFA signing before he was fired. Bergevin left the team with a majority of their great prospects and his fingerprints will be all over at least 1 Montreal Cup within the next decade with how great our development system is, thank you Tree for jinxing yourself once again. It might have taken a while but glad the Habs have gotten themselves in the best possible position before a dynasty.
