I agree and disagree on different points. I think your comparison of Matthews and Bratt is pretty surface level at best. And you make a few factually incorrect statements as well
Cant blame the players for getting paid…. the fact that dubas still has a job in the nhl just blows my mind.
Yup the corp four are not tough enough even though they get paid way to much so there not going to win a cup for a while
Ok with Marner, Matthews and Nylander. You sign guys young based on what you think they will give you. Sometimes you even get a bargain on what appears to be expensive. Tavares contract was atrocious. Caudield and Bratt can't be compared to Marner Nylander Matthews. These Leaf players were all considered better than Bratt and Canfield…by a lot. What I will say is they should have signed them to 8 year deals at those numbers, not at shorter terms so they walk straight to unrestricted free agency the second they are eligible
IMO keep Reilly, and Marner, get rid of matthews and tavares and build around a new insane goalie – EX: get Connor hellebuyck, make sure your future isn’t completely screwed 💀
Nothing new here. Dubas left leafs in bad shape – but mentioning Lou as potentially being better is laughable and shows a lack of understanding of how much of a mess he created in NJ and NY and he has his fingerprints on some bad early moves for the leafs as well (Patrick Marleau comes to mind). I could only imagine the nuclear waste he would have left if leafs hadn’t moved on from him

Dubas also had all of the pressure in the world and NEEDED to sign Tavares. It was expected. Same with signing the core. The problem here is that the players are not performing. If the Leafs were more successful, no one would even be mentioning the Dubas signings. There are a lot of teams that pay their star players big money. ALSO – keep in mind that covid screwed up the cap and that it was expected to be much higher than it is currently. Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Marner, O'Reilly are the big guns and they should be showing up under the big lights. They aren't and they haven't. That is not Dubas's fault. Dubas did all he could to surround the team with complimentary pieces and did a fantastic job. The team just failed. Please use a different narrative instead of pointing fingers at Dubas for the situation the Leafs are in. It's tiring and lazy.
Tavares is a washed up bum and that contract will knee-cap this team for years to come.

Lou is horrible at contract negotiations and constantly over pays for players… just saying Dubas isn’t alone in this.
But anyone with common sense could see this issue coming. The good news is that the market corrected itself recently after these shitty contracts were signed.

Oilers gave Nugent-Hopkins a big contract extension- results:1 goal in 13 playoff games in 2023. Same story.

I kinda hope they trade marber for puerre luc Dubois. He's kind of the perfect guy they need, an elite point maker that has grit
Dubious screwed the Laffs when he bent the knee to Nylander, when the correct thing to do would've been to cut him loose & let walk.
Instead, he vastly overpaid for a guy who was pedestrian & hadn't proved a damn thing yet. Not only did this allow Marner & Mathews to demand above what they were more likely on track for, but it also showed to every agent & player in the league that Dumb*** was a soft soyboy push-over in negotiations.
So sure, maybe Nylander is kinda producing now? His still horrifically inconsistent, but most of all his attitude is garbage. You want guys who will put the team ahead of their personal bank accounts, not guy who will fleece you for every penny & leave you with nothing but scraps to fill out the entire rest of you team.
Marner & Mathews just saw what Willy did, and like him, took the easy dollar signs. Again, garbage attitude. Guys who truely want to hoist a Cup will take a bit of a cut so their team can bring in another good depth body, and/or be able to afford that juicy 2nd/3rd line guy.
