Matthew, he is a very good player but he's not. Conor McDavid at least equal money. It will be fair equal money with McDavid so estimates can't appreciate him more and to be able to sign couple of good defenseman that's what they really need. Heavier defense. It has to be the number one priority to the team right now and the last serious they got outplay out. Hit out coached. They were not heavy enough to respond and we all remember what happened to Mariana

If the leafs had any idea how to build a winning team, they'd dish off Matthews for a top Canadian player with heart and actual determination. And pick up a top 5 goalie. If a team doesn't have key ingredients they can only go so far into the playoffs
There's no way he's the best player in the league, and in my opinion he isn't even the best player on the team. Really in a cap era NHL there should also be a hard cap as far as what any one player on a team should get, and to me he's already hit that.

If it so important to him to be the highest paid player in the league it tells you all you need to know about his character. At least MacKinnon has won a Cup.
Auston Matthews likely won't resign with the Leafs. Sources close to the Calder, Hart, & Rocket Richard trophy winner, and first player to record four goals in his first NHL game confirm. He has no attachment to any former Leafs greats ie: Keon, Sittler, Vaive, Clark, Gilmour, Sundin. Its baffling to him how he wasn't named captain of this team. What else does he need to do? While he publicly says all the right things, he's pissed.
