This had a multiple factors. First it's about getting Cap Compliant, then it frees up funds to chase a 3rd line Center via trade for a Winger (hopefully) and maybe they'll need some $ for that salary. And maybe something similar for a second pairing D if no Center surfaces.
Agree with Rick they HAD to do this. Also agree with Donnie he just wasn’t as good as I thought he would be. He really did well defensively in his first year but I wanted to see 10 12 goals out of him. He was regularly scoring 20 plus in Arizona but then comes here and scores like 4 or whatever.
Donnie's worried about Pettersen but if the Canucks don't make the playoffs again next season, I don't see Pettersen signing a long term deal when his contract is up. He'll resign for only long enough until he loses his restricted free agent status and then jump ship to a proper winning team and we'll be left with a team offense built around a 32 or 33 year old Miller.
most decisions are exactly this problematic pain either way so the timing is the deciding factor and they had no choice everybody across the league knew the canucks were in a weak bargaining position.Kudos to ownership and management
My goodness, when is Don Taylor going to realise that Patrick Allvin isn't Jim Benning? It's getting downright neurotic. He's already worried about the next buyout! This is not rational.
I want Mayfield and Rodrigues. Maybe Soucy. That's it from free agency. Orlov would be nice, but we would have to spend every available dollar on him, and why would he come here?
MOST IMPORTANTLY, this takes the 'gun' away from The Canucks' management's head, in negotiating to move Boeser / Myers / Garland / anyone, really. They had NOTHING to bargain with other teams' GM's, when these other teams KNEW it was Vancouver that HAD to move their players, due to their CAP crunch. Now, they can approach teams to make a far more fair deal, with both teams looking to help each other, rather than the other team saying, "Okay, Vancouver; what will you give us TO HELP YOU?" This buyout SHOULD lead to not only $8 Mill cap space, but (Boeser or Myers, maybe BOTH ???), + $6 Mill (or +$12 Mill), to open $14 ~ 20 MILL CAP SPACE! NOW they can 'rebuild'.
Here is the thing. We can't live in constant fear. Have some patience and wait to see what transpires before running off like a chicken with its head cut off.
Buying out OEL isn't a bold move. It's a desperate move, because they couldn't get any trades done. If they didn't buy him out they're trading someone out of town with the Canucks 1st round draft pick and going forward unable to to spend in free agency. Now Team Rutherford doesn't have to be forced into making a mistake. They can just go out and make horrific mistakes organically. Definitely agree that there are valid concerns about what the management that put this team in salary cap jeopardy does with their free agency cash.

This whole situation is like biting into a shit sandwich and hoping you get the piece with the least amount of shit in it.
They’ll be buying out JT Miller’s even bigger contract in 4 years

I wish I had a job where I get a Payday for lack of Performance, things need to change.

Any updates on Poolman ? Will he be available for training camp ? Will they drop or trade him too ?

they should sign another 30 year old player to a long term contract only to buy him out 2 years in lol
yeah I totally agree with Rick here they need to be smart with the cap. Benning was terrible for this team.
time to overpay for a questionable 3rd line center and then next year we're going to be in the same situation

How is Dhali still on the air at all. He may have connections but OMFG he's hard to listen to at times.
Fast forward 5 years. New management "We are hamstrung by the previous managements mistakes and therefore we cannot remain competitive"

i hope some one gives him a chance & he has a small bounce back….. the nucks stink.
Screw this franchise! Over 35 years as a fan i am sick of this franchise being mediocre! I hope Patterson walks and goes to a better franchise!
I can see them using that money to extend Petey's contract this summer.
“I’m worried about July 1st” is exactly why this team will always be mediocre with some pretty good seasons mixed in. Never a cup.
this might be one of your worse vids boys, like I'm not sure what point either of you are trying to make here…
J.T. Compher
Bold moves win cups, stupid moves make you Canucks
Unless they make some moves that makes Pettersson hopeful about the future I suspect he's not re-signing anyway.
use the money to get luke shenn back and a 3rd line center and your done. Myers will be up next year so you''ll have money to resign petty
They will have a ton of cap space when petey says I don't want to resign team that can't be competitive

the NHL needs to step in and fix this whole buy out thing and save the GMs/owners from themselves…
