Hey Guys,
I saw Zuc’s skates for sale on ProStock hockey last week and was enticed to try them out. I’ve skated on a set of retail Bauer Mach size 5 for the last season. The prior season, I skated on a set of Marchessault’s Supreme 2S Pros.
There are a few things different I’ve noticed from retail.
-The TUUK holders have the front and back tips cut flat.
-A size 5 retail skate is fitted with 246 size holders. These have 254 size holders.
-The eyelets are overmolded with leather/ composite rather than the plastic “hyperflex” design.
-Size 5 retail skates have 9 eyelet sets.
These have 10 eyelet sets.
-The tongue is soft felt.
-I suspect the boot was molded extra stiff with additional plys of carbon composite.
-There is a leather piece sewed and bonded on the inner ankle on both skates.
My question is; what is the purpose of the peculiar piece of leather on the outside of the boot on the inner ankle? It couldn’t be for shot blocking, right? Is it to lower the impact you feel on your foot when you’re hopping over the boards, and your skates hit the side of the boards?
Anybody else have any guesses?
The pictures attached show what they look like. Also looks like Zuc posted a pic wearing them for some recreational skating.

Pretty sure it’s just extra padding for the ankle in case of getting hit.
If he got hit there in the past, he probably knows that another direct hit would cause him to miss time.
