In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Evgeny Kuznetsov and what they should do with him. Kuzy saw a dip in production this past season but was top 3 in goals just two seasons ago. According to Washington Hockey Now: “Kuznetsov’s 2022-23 season was uncharacteristically unproductive — 12 goals and 43 assists in 81 games — he is only one season removed from a 78-point season across 79 games. If Caps want to play playoffs again, they need changes, something fresh and new. This season was lots of injuries but I didn't see an excitement when they return, from Backstrom, Carlson, Wilson… Oshe was hyped up after return and score goals, but then again injurie… As it painful sounds, Kuzi or one of my mentioned players has to go if they want a comback
To my understanding he is still having personal off ice issues. This has been going on for sometime. I think it's time to move on from him. He's a distraction on the team.
I understand that must keep Ovechin, but Backstrom is done, move on from him and his 9 million bucks
Kuzy was minus 26 last season; if he doesn’t want to be here then trade him
One option could be a deal centred around Kuznetsov and Scheifele with additional pieces and/or retention being added. Over the last 3 seasons, Scheifele has outproduced Kuznetsov by 39 pts, or 13 pts/season, so the gap between them isn't that major.
The Jets are already in a place where the departures of Scheifele, Dubois and Hellebuyck all seem inevitable. Swapping Scheifele for Kuznetsov would allow the Jets to kick that centerman can one year further down the road, while they figure out what in-house options that are available to them.
