The New Jersey Devils have re-signed Erik Haula. He was one of their key depth pieces during their historical season. Tom Fitzgerald gave him a three-year, $9.45 million extension. This is a great move by the front office because Haula has an extensive history of contributing to playoff-caliber rosters. There are reports saying that Connor Hellebuyck wants to be traded to New Jersey. So, I am going to revisit the potential hypothetical trade scenario.

Let me a devil's advocate (no pun intended), what if we trade for Hellebuyck with som assets like right for Sharangovich, Graves, and something lik 2nd and 3rd round pick, with the knowledge that he sign for 3 years at 7m?
(not really realistic, just a thought)
I don;t like him going to devils really, but do we REALLY want to pass on an opportunity to get that elite goalie, or do we trust our development program to have Akira ready for number 1 next year, especially for he playoffs (or Vitek not to crumble in the playoffs)
The last time the Devils didnt draft a goalie was in 2014

I’d love to see Hellebuyck. I’d trade vitek and groom Akira to be our future. We have a lot of youth and giving up a few draft picks won’t hurt. We can’t win in the playoffs with our current goaltender situation
I agree with you on Hellebuyck trade. Don’t do it! Hellebuyck playoff stats where terrible this year, he is on the downside. Stick with Vaneck and Schmid.
I think we should package Vitek and some picks for Hellebuyck.

The goalie situation isn't really a problem. Assuming VV and AS are the goalie tandem, it won't take much hard work for Fitzgerald to find someone to fill that 3rd string role, especially if he trades the rights to a pending free agent for a current AHL goalie or a vet who is already on the outside looking in. Considering how many goalies he was able to get last season, I doubt it would be a struggle to find a guy to fill that role.

I am against Hellebuyck. But! If he wants to join the Devils he must give them a discount plus his desire to play for Devils might facilitate a possible trade with the Jets and bring down a return for him. As for the contract I'd say 5.5-6M a year. Also sign 4-5 year contract. Not 6 or 7 years. That's reasonable amount and term. If he is still good after the contract expires he will have no problem to sign another contract be it the Devils or other team. But if he wants 6-7 years for 7M or more thats a no go.
It's ultra smart to get Haula locked before July. A lot of teams prioritise the big money players at the cost of high value players.
I’m not sold on Hellebuyck…… Work on the goalies we have now and see how the farm is going……
