Just a terrible decision. No reason for him to be extended at all

  2. ObviousAtlas

This is a smart move by Treliving, for his own security. If he brings in a new coach this year he doesn’t have the “fire the couch” bullet to use if things go south (this year or in the future). A GM only has so many coaching hired before he comes under fire.

I’m sure he likes Keefe and isn’t doing this selfishly, but it is a lens at which to look at this decision.

  3. We can and we will run it back again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

  4. 1columbia

New GM with core four and coach all potentially back is comedy.

  5. Coolsbreeeze

Wrong guy that was kept. Dubas should be here and Keefe gone.

  6. backstreets_93

Announce the Holl and Kerfoot signings next. I want this place in absolute dumpster fire mode.

This is a, “let’s see what you do now that your buddy isn’t GM” year. The fire under their ass has never been hotter.

  8. StrygwyrSuperstar

Disappointed about this the way he coached after TDL was comical.

This is familiar, wonder how itā€™ll play outā€¦ šŸ«¤

I’ll admit to not being surprised, but also a bit disappointed. I’m going to wait and see what happens with Matthews and Nylander before getting worked up though.

The Leafs are living out the ā€œWanna see me do it again?ā€ SpongeBob meme.

  12. Deluxechin

Guys come on now, maybe this time he wonā€™t get out coaches in the playoffs, i mean he has every time previous, but maybe this time he wonā€™t

If you thought Keefe didnā€™t adjust enough before with his homie in the chair above him, youā€™re going to see someone eager to please this year.

You keep the coach, give him a small extension so you donā€™t have a ā€œlame duckā€ and give him a short leash from a performance standpoint, but a longer leash with which to say and do what he wants with his players.

If Dubas was kept I wouldā€™ve wanted Keefe gone. With Dubas gone this was the only logical play.

I’m not sure how I feel about this all of a sudden. I was always a fan but when I read that Kerfoot and Kampf might be returning, my heart sunk. My first thought was here we go again. Oh my – i don’t know anymore.

    I canā€™t believe weā€™re running it back ā€¦

Ok thatā€™s out of the way, I get it for Brad to shield himself with Keefeā€™s body, but goddamn it.

No shock here. Treliving didnā€™t really have any choice given the timing of everything. Firing Keefe wouldā€™ve added more uncertainty to the entire Leafs situation and put Treliving in a tough spot having to find a new coach asap.

Now heā€™s sort of got a year grace period. Keefe bombs in regular season or playoffs, Treliving can honestly say he wasnā€™t his guy and move on to someone else he can maybe take some time to choose. Replace Keefe this summer and he gives that up.

But the whole thing is a mess IMO. It all reeks of heavy interference by the MLSE board through Shanahan. Some people loved how Dubas was ditched, but this all is the opposite of what shouldā€™ve went down. Keefe shouldā€™ve been gone right after the Florida series loss and Dubas shouldā€™ve been extended.

Now it seems like next year will be yet another running back of almost the entirely same crew on the bench and on the ice. Just seems crazy given whatā€™s happened every single spring for years now.

  18. Strowbreezy

We’re running it back again boys! Ffs.

  19. NatureGivesAndTakes

A lot of us won’t be happy, but this is probably the better option now for lack of a better choice. Also, I can’t imagine he’ll be given a long leash, extension or no extension. Keefe’s time here is very much on the clock.

  20. -TheWickedEnd-

I guess I am the only r/leafs user that is happy about this news! Lol bunch of downers

This is a good move by Treliving. You don’t have much roster flexibility so if things go south your only real meaningful option is firing your coach. Keep that bullet in the chamber until you need it. If the Leafs have another strong regular season, great, Treliving looks patient and smart. If they have a bad streak he now has something big he can do to try and turn it around.

  22. TitanDaFukUp

Same coach, same core of highly-skilled but soft forwards, same aging group of defensemen. What could possibly go wrong? As you were Treliving.

So Dubas got offered a better job and left.

Weā€™ve essentially done nothing. Another year with no success and no changes made.

Weā€™ll lose some non-core players we canā€™t afford and gain some others we can. But all reactive, nothing proactive.

If you believe in the roster (I do) then the coach has got to be fired. If you believe in the coach (I donā€™t) then you have to trade a core piece.

But we will do nothing and expect a new result. And I will cheer all the way, and by November I will believe this is our year again. So I guess Iā€™m just as insane as the rest of themā€¦ (audible sigh)

  24. Mustard__Tiger

Keefe is the Dwayne Casey of coaches. Good in the regular season but just gets out coached everytime and makes no adjustments. This makes no sense.
