Dallas Mavericks NBA Draft reflection, DeAndre Ayton deal for Dallas, and NBA Free agency musings

Kirk and Josh connect to talk about the #DallasMavericks #NBADraft last week, including Kirk’s thoughts on the trade back and selection of Dereck Lively and the trade for Olivier-Maxence Prosper and the acquisition of Richaun Holmes. They also discuss the Tuesday news of Dallas nearly acquiring DeAndre Ayton from the #PhoenixSuns. They plan to end on some general free agency musings.

Small chance this gets bumped to Wednesday.

  1. Re: Xavier’s article: it wasn’t that he didn’t like Lively much, it was that he appeared to be opting for deliberately unfair takes for attention (ie clickbait)…that sort of stuff is all over YouTube and is not at all what MMB is built on…he needs a good hard think about which direction he’s going to take because that article was utter trash…respectfully ❤

  2. Really insightful pod. Ayton's deal is too heavy of a load for a non-star center. Even if they can develop him (which I don't think they are going to, aggressiveness isn't something you learn) tightening you budget for him is definitely a no-go zone

  3. If luka can't wait 2 more seasons, trade him NOW!!! If he becomes a Dame 2.0, with reports every 5 mins about how he wants to leave, if the mavs build through the draft or commit to young talent, I'll dig straight down in minecraft. ESPECIALLY If he is gonna spend half his minutes on the floor fighting the refs.

    * Insert obligatory xavier article joke here lol

  4. I remember watching a Q and A with Cuban one time and he was asked if he would hire someone with potential or experience and he said experience every time. Definitely gives some insight to where our trading of draft picks for more than a decade has been coming from.

  5. Ayton+Kyrie+Luka is just too much money for three players and Ayton is the one I would leave off.

  6. "Well not shot – this is a shot" classic Kirk. Love it! 🙂 Start to get excited for the next season. (corrected:)

  7. Doesn’t make any sense. Your saying that trading for Ayton means the can’t use the MLE because they’d be over the cap but it’s not like theyre taking on drastic extra money in the deal anyway maybe $3 million. They’d have to do other moves like moving on Maxi who I think needs to happen and of course McGee. I think maxi has some value and probably could net you a second rounder or two. Covington plus 2 seconds for Maxi am I crazy for thinking the Clippers would do this to get a stretch big who can defend the paint a bit and switch? Use one of them seconds to dump McGee and your taking back less money even if you trade for Ayton. Also if they don’t use the non tax payer they’d still have access to the tax payer MLE around $7 million there’s some solid bench players that you could get for that.

  8. Also let’s be honest Lively isn’t going to be playable this season why not give him 20 mins off the bench backing up for Ayton. I think at the price that’s being mentioned you have to do it if your the Mavs

  9. Not sure why we keep saying the Mavs HAVE to rush things "in the Luka doncic era".

Mavs being better in 2-3 years than in 0-1 year is better for keeping Luka here. Don't make the mistake the Cavs made with LeBron
