The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to keep their first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and the player they selected wasn’t who many expected the team to take. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the Leafs taking Easton Cowan with the 28th overall pick and some of the justification for the decision. Mike and Dave share their top moments from the first-round of the NHL Draft including a flub by the Montreal Canadiens, the Arizona Coyotes making some puzzling decisions and a few notable picks. I think great pick he one of the fastest and smartest guys in the draft his second half and playoffs was unreal he carried his team in playoffs he is who i was hoping to pick he will surprise you all his will to win and work hard he will be a nhl player for along time
He will be in the top 10 at least in his draft class he says he wants to play like Kadri and goes to front of the net
Happy with the pick after reading up on him. He's one of the top sleepers of the draft from what I've learned. Great name. Farm kid. A playoff performer. And he will only get better given more icetime next year.

I’m good with this pick because while the guy doesn’t have Elite potential from I’ve heard he’s also very unlikely to bust
There’s a really good chance he’ll be playing on our 3rd line at some point in the future
Miles Wood, Austin Watson and Carson Soucy would be good pick ups.
And if Anaheim doesn't sign Max Comtois, leafs should be in on him.

I’m sick to my stomach with the leafs 1st round pick and the Kampt signing. This leafs organization is an absolute disgrace and Shanny should be fired. I’m so tired of this disaster of a management and team.
Yeah this Cowan kid may end up being good.
He started by playing in covid, so it screws up his development. He then plays a season in greater ontario junior hockey league (GOJHL), and by the end up of his first season there the knights pick him up in OHL.
He gets scouted by London knights, and finds himself playing as a 17 year old rookie, which is a year older than normal. But by the end of that season he goes from being a bottom pickup to fill in the lineup to first line minutes, and key player.
If you can go from 4th/3rd line pickup to first line minutes with a team like the London knights, in the space of 1 SEASON, you might have something special in you.
The guys 5 foot 10 inches and weighs 170 pounds. Now the will to drive the net is built in and can't be taught. Bunting much bigger then this kid can't get to the net in the playoffs so why is this guy going to be able to accomplish it. Another small forward the leafs don't need and this is a terrible pick.
this makes me wonder if it's been shanny pulling the strings over the past 6 years……
