The 2023 NHL Draft is complete, Steve Yzerman & Kris Draper have made their picks for Hockeytown, and we have a new Detroit Red Wings draft class – and with it, another MASSIVE podcast mega-episode!
Tune in as we begin by going over the 1st round of the draft (results below) (5:35), leading up to the Detroit Red Wings selecting Nate Danielson 9th overall. We discuss how he compares to Dvorsky, Moore, & others available, whether the pick fits Detroit’s rebuild needs, how he slots in with Larkin & Kasper, pick reactions, & more analysis (16:40).
Moving through the 1st round, we reach the Red Wings’ second top pick: Axel Sandin Pellikka at 17th overall. We discuss how he “replaces” Filip Hronek, addresses a positional need, how he slots in compared to Seider, Edvinsson, & other defensemen, his style of game (Letang type?), pick reactions, value, 1st round grades, & plenty more (29:30).
We move on to the 2nd round, where we go over Yzerman’s 3 picks (& a trade back), first, goaltender Trey Augustine out of the USNTDP (40:55), big, right-handed defenseman Andrew Gibson (47:55), and an even bigger, hard-hitting left-handed defenseman in Brady Cleveland, which leads to a passionate discussion on draft strategy, upside, & Detroit’s lack of scoring talent (54:55).
After that, Detroit drafts brother of Liam Dower Nilsson (2021 Red Wings pick), Noah Dower Nilsson, to start the 3rd round, adding scoring talent (1:04:55). In the 4th round, left-handed defenseman Larry Keenan (1:09:20), and in the 5th round RHD Jack Phelan (1:11:40) and intriguing German forward Kevin Bicker (1:13:20). Another “Cossa insurance” goaltender in Rudy Guimond in the 6th round (1:15:20) before wrapping up with center Emmitt Finnie in the 7th round (1:16:05).
To wrap up the initial draft recap, we give our overall Red Wings/Yzerman & Draper draft grades, vibes, and general thoughts (1:17:40) – with plenty more on these players to come!
Finally, we discuss the trade in which Yzerman acquired Klim Kostin & Kyler Yamamoto for “Future Considerations” from Ken Holland & the Edmonton Oilers, where both players could fit into the lineup, and if Yamamoto will even stay with the Red Wings (1:23:45).
To wrap up, we discuss the Alex DeBrincat trade that never materialized on the draft floor, why Pierre Dorion hasn’t pulled the trigger, other trades that never happened, free agency notes, Al Murray news, & lots more (1:31:55) before we take your question during Overtime (1:42:10) – enjoy this massive episode!

I could see Yzerman trading Ben Chariot at 50% retained for Jeff Petry and aquiring a pick as well.
Kevin Bicker could be an interesting player in the future. He is underrated a lot.
Most excited about ASP, this guy is an amazing talent. He is not a redundant, simply do not have a player of his talent in the prospect pool. Could not ask for a more important replacement for Hronek.
One important aspect is ASP and his puck skills on the shootout. Really can dangle the puck
Love the move for another goalie, keep the accelerator pressed down.
I was okay with Danielson, he is a RHC. In regards to Danielson and Kasper, it appears the pivots will be physical puck possession holding onto the puck deep in the zone (like Zetterberg) with the wingers being more dynamic and taking aggressive angles to the net. Dvorsky may prove to be a better player but SY had his list of preferable for Nate's ceiling.
Be idiotic to get Yamamoto for free and then buy him out and have $ on the books for 2 years. If anything retain 1.5 and flip him I can’t see a team not taking a chance at 1,5 cap hit
At what point is it socially acceptable to start questioning some of the decisions made in the “yzerplan”? There is a very clear draft strategy outside of the first round, and it’s a bit of a head scratcher. With three back to back seconds and nothing to lose, I for the life of me don’t understand not swinging on one or more of the forwards still available. Hell, I would be more positive about this draft if we traded all three to move up for Edstrom. I wish I could share the drone like excitement other fans have and just endlessly post the yzerman laser beam eyes meme every time he breaths
If Axel Sandin Pellikka has an upside anything close to Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes, Detroit's Defense will be absolutely formidable for a decade plus!
Evan with the sniper early on
Did Yzerman offer a trade to Montreal for number 5 for 9,17 and Wallender?
I'm gonna continue to bang the table for Nate Danielson to hs known as the Canadian Dragon.
I was able to go to the draft. All the pissy French Canadian fans walked out once they learned it was reinbacher and not michkov 😂😂😂
Regarding the Brandon Team, they had three players drafted. Danielson (1st rd), the goalie (2nd rd) and an overage 20yrold center (7th rd). Pretty brutal.
Red Wings put a lot of emphasis on character which accounts for the differences in your preferences. Brad often mentions no scoring talent on the red wings, I think that is a result of their emphasis on defense. Florida made it to the the Finals with the same philosophy.
Danielson has sneaky good offense.
Am I the only one who's not sold on debrincat? He played with Kane, 1 year in ottawa and his goals dropped significantly. 27 goals, mostly on pp is not worth 8m a year?
Detroit needed to do whatever was necessary to trade up with Arizona to get Michkov. I think trading up 3 places to get a player that almost every other year would have the first overall pick was within reach. It's going to be looked back as a missed opportunity to get a franchise player.
Just got done watching some of Sandin Pellikas play. Man in the offensive zone he really reminds me of Cale Makar. Not saying he is going to be anywhere close to Cale in the future. But wouldnt that be neat? 😅
I can Easily see Danielson become a new David Bakes !
Always funny how people get upset when their guys don't get picked. The GM's know more than you. Imagine doubting the guys that drafted Seider. I just go into drafts curious to see which positions we bolster with prospects and get my dopamine rush off that. 98% of people talking about prospects in all sports are dumbasses
i would take carlsson over fantili as well
fantilli was happy to end up a 6 hour car drive from his home town i think
