NY Islanders sign Ilya Sorokin, Scott Mayfield, Pierre Engvall & Semyon Varlamov | Instant Reaction

The New York Islanders have been busy re-signing their own players as NHL free agency gets rolling, signing Ilya Sorokin to a new 8-year deal ($8.25 mil AAV) as well as re-signing Pierre Engvall and Scott Mayfield to 7-year deals and Semyon Varlamov to a 4-year contract. Gil Martin of Locked On Islanders joins Ross Levitan of Locked On Senators to break down the moves, which seemingly lock the Isles into a core without many clear avenues for improving it. Signing Sorokin was a no-brainer, but what about everyone else?

  1. All great signings! Now if the can figure out free agency candidates to fill their needs, but doubt there's anything left for that!

  2. We live and die by our goalies. I fine with it. Mayfield has to step and grow up. And the big Frenchman I think will be more comfortable with the team direction. All good

  3. Has Lou lost his mind ? I like Sorokin and Varlamov deals but 7 years for Mayfield and Engvall ? It would be nice to get DeBrincat but I don't see how..

  4. Wtf seven years for mayfield who sucks now! His play regressed last year. Engvall is Bailey 2.0 seven fn years. Seriously. Come on four for varly who’s already what 35. lol
Senile Lou has buried this team for god knows how many years. Let me guess all NO trade clauses? What’s he going to overpay for debrincat? Let me guess jgp, wahlstrom, and 3 first round picks? lol

  5. Yoda did good accomplishing his goal.
Mayfield is a decent deal. Definitely team friendly. I expect a very long and liberal NTC. Even if he has a shakey 2 year ending, the contract will very age well.
Engvall…7 years! Not much more than Beauvillier with longer legs, but he is cheaper than Beau. But…… 7 YEARS!
Varly was surprisingly cheap. Perhaps because he got 2 more years than anyone else was likely to offer. He's had some injury issues, but I'm confident some team would have paid 5 or 6 mil per for 2 years to tandem with a young goalie.

I thought Yodas wish list would have cost $12 mil, but Yoga got it done for 9. It could work out if Varly and Engvall remain moveable for most of their contracts.

Now Yoda signs Wahlstrom and we all hope the youngsters, along with the vets, can really get going. Then next year we get to wonder who Yoda ships out so he can start paying Sorokin.
