It’s completely understandable that phillips felt burnt by the club and wanted to follow a coach who’s seen enough of him to know mitch will go to bat getting him a legit shot in the NHL, but don’t expect this to be a recurring thing moving forward… young guys should he getting more opportunities in calgary now

He was in seven training camps (2016-22), with four different head coaches (Gulutzan, Peters, Ward, Sutter). He had numerous chances to make the team and never did. That’s on Phillips, not the organization. He passed through waivers numerous times, where any team could have had him for free. He was great in the AHL the last two years, not his entire career. He looked out of place when called up last year. I hope he does well, but he got more than enough fair shots with Calgary. He was also offered a two year contract with Calgary.

While I think he was mismanaged, I also think it makes sense to move to another organization with how unlikely it is for him to make this roster. Sharangovich, Ruzicka, Duehr, Pelletier, Coronato, Zary, Schwindt, and Pettersen are all going to be fighting for a limited number of roster spots. Although Phillips is probably a better offensive weapon than many of these players, almost all are better suited to a bottom line role than Phillips is.

Personally I don’t think anyone should be upset over Phillips. I watched him quite a bit with the Wranglers this year, and he never wowed me. I found that in the games where we lost, he was easily shut down by bigger guys. Even in the games I went to where we won, he never did anything to make me think he was this elite talent wasting away in the minors. Do I think he should have gotten more of a look at the NHL level? Absolutely. But I also see why he didn’t. I don’t think he’s this game breaking talent that everyone on here makes him out to be, and it would be an absolute shock if he suddenly bursts onto the scene in Washington. I’m all for giving smaller players a shot, but I really think Phillips is too small to be an impact player. When you’re that short, you either have to be super physical like Marchand, or so skilled like Gaudreau that your scoring can overcome the size difference. Phillips doesn’t have either of those characteristics. If he did he would have been an NHL regular by now.
