when a ‘bad’ defender wins NHL defensemen of the year.

Erik Karlsson put up one of the most historic seasons we’ve seen from an NHL defensemen in years. 101 Points in 82 games was enough for him to win the Norris Trophy… but with a -26 stat line, it has raised debate on whether or not he should’ve won this trophy. In this video, we breakdown why Erik Karlsson is one of the most unique defenceman in the NHL.

  1. Best defenceman in the league ? I wouldn't want him on my team if i was a GM. More pucks go in his net, than the goals he helps generate.

  2. Yes, as this video and previous commenters have said, a DD trophy. Have though it for a long long time. Lidstrom is a good one, but my name idea has always been the Vladimir Konstantinov Trophy.

  3. Bobby Orr was said to have played a now obsolete position, the Rover. It's great fun in softball but has no place in hockey. The +/- system is as important as the on base % in baseball. Hit lots of home runs and you're a star but all those strikeouts hurt the team. Numbers don't tell the whole story so Karlsson was a good offensive defense man, not a Norris winner.

  4. Plus minus is deceptive, agreed, but just on eye test he's as reliable as a Ford Pinto defensively. If a defenseman can't DEFEND, he's not a defender, plain and simple. The Norris Trophy should consider points, blocked shots, takeaways to giveaways ratios, +/- with a grain of salt, what they do at both ends of the ice matters, the best Offensive defensemen of old, Red Kelly, Doug Harvey, and Bobby Orr, (I'm talking early Norris Era here), they were all very good defensively, in Fact Harvey was called by his peers the best Defenseman when it came to all sides of the game, even better than Orr. Orr was great defensively but he had the occasional lapse due to his offensive game. If you cannot play the central duty of a defenseman consistently, you aren't the best defenseman at all, go for the Ross then, the Hart, but by golly don't try to make me call you the best Defenseman, because you didn't earn it. The points Karlsson put up were great, but Miro Heiskanen have shown ability at both ends of the ice, there are many defenders that trounce Karlsson defensively with only a slight drop in points.

  5. We do not need a new trophy we need voters to understand the Norris is supposed to be best NHL defenseman, not best NHL rover

  6. So move him to the wing then. Defenseman that plays no defense makes no sense to me. He's just a stat padder

  7. Ek65 winning is like burns winning. Terrible in the D zone and people only vote for points. Move those guys up somewhere to contribute. Fox or Josi or Makar are better all around

  8. Quinn Hughes is so much better as is Makar . Both these guys are not only amazing Offensive Players they are also Good Defensively. 101 points on a Terrible Team is Incredible but Overall theres many better choices for this award.

  9. i think it says alot about the media around the nhl. these guys just look at counting stats and hand out awards based off that

  10. It is absurd they don't have a Bobby Orr trophy for offensive d man. Forwards have the selke… offensive d men are winning the norris like 90 percent of the time. Im not saying d only players should win but all around should probably not have guys that are all offence winning
