Young Bruins will be given chance to step up in 2023-24

Don’t assume the slew of signings on July 1 means younger players won’t be given a chance to crack the opening night roster for the Boston Bruins.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, “Bruins have a lot of young players they are hoping take some bigger roles next season – John Beecher, Marc McLaughlin, Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, Jakub Lauko….next year will be about who grabs a spot in a year of opportunity and theyll make decisons next summer.”

So, Milan Lucic, James van Riemsdyk, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Patrick Brown will have to work hard to keep their spots becuse they can be easily sent to the AHL.

Morgan Geekie, though, will have a bigger role than he did in Seattle.

Plus, Mason Lohrei impresses early at development camp, and Fabian Lysell is taking it easy because of a head injury.

  1. The fact that most of these guys signed for 1m of less shows they aren't firmly entrenched. It's entirely possible some of those guys get buried in Providence. Maybe even likely in some cases. Morgan Geekie is likely to play. Third line center if Bergeron doesn't come back 4th line center if he does (I don't think transitioning him to win makes much sense when you have Lysell and McLaughlin). And I think Shattenkirk is at least likely to start as your bottom pairing right d. Both of those contracts being over 1m. The other guys are going to have to battle for spots. Lucic, and JVR are both super interesting and I'd assume JVR is being brought in to fill Foligno's role. 3rd-4th liner with a PP net front specialty. Lucic is a no brainer add. Good guy you like it the room. Not the offensive player he once was. Nor as fleet of foot. But the guy is still an imposing physical presence and he started fighting again. And his big knock towards his end of being a Bruin was that he stopped fighting and got lazy. He seems to have come full circle on both of those things. He wants to stay in the league and his offense dried up so he works hard and fights again. If Bergeron doesn't resign I imagine it's the intention that Brown be the 4th line center but I think a guys like Beecher and Merkulov will be given every chance to take that job. Brown can be 100% buried in the minors so if someone looks better than him they are going to give that player a shot.
And yeah a guy like McLaughlin;s got to be a sleeper pick for making the squad. Hasn't lit it up in the AHL by any means but he looks good and effective every time they let him play in the NHL. I'd love to see him get a second line slot if Zacha is slotting over to center with the presumed retirement of Krejci.
Lohrei continues to be impressing everyone. Sure seems like the Bruins still need to move a left to make a slot for him. Be that Forbort, or be that Gryz. One of those guys needs to go. Gryz makes more sense to me as he's more expensive, is likely to get you a return, and is a guy you have a similar player too in your system in Jack Achan. You don't really have another good physical shut down left to replace Forbort and if Shattenkirk is going to be your bottom pairing right considering his defensive problems I'd just assume see him play with Forbort and not with Gryz (I presume you'd want to play Lohrei with McAvoy to give him the best possible chance to be effective and it's a good mentor sort of situation).

  2. I think put Mason Lohrei in the AHL first 10-25 games, see how he does, if he's ready for the jump, then look to move, forbort or grizzy it's the only 2 players what makes sense

Jakub Zboril should be moved. he is 26 and no offense to his Career but he is not an NHL D not for the bruins anyway, maybe bottom few teams he could crack a spot, maybe.

$1,300,000, seems too high, making more then Shattenkirk and was making more then clifton last year, why are we holding on to him??

Mitchell, Regula, Jack Ahcan, Mason Lohrei, could be even more D, all would be cheaper and most likely better, instead we let Jack Ahcan walk, could of had him as the 7th D

i know its the draft class we had 3 picks in a row, but time to just move on, he wants to play he's 26 and he ain't in our top 6 and shouldn't be

  3. Even if Lohrei starts in Providence (which might not be bad for his development), you could always move a player once he's ready for the NHL. IMO, at least splitting the season has some major benefits. Another training camp will help him.

  4. Good show, Ian like your straight info style, as opposed to the people who act like their trying to get a job with Ringling bros.

  5. I really like the Geekie signing. He's a forward with size and skill. Should be able to play in all situations.  Gives the Bruins youth and depth at Center.

Hopefully, Bergeron is back for one more season (this give the Bruins a bridge to being able to sign higher-end free agent talent).   Would still love to see Krejci back at some point as well, but maybe that's wishful thinking.

Zacha is better as the 2C playing with Pasta. IMO, Coyle is an excellent 3C.
Geekie probably centers 4th line, but also moves up and down with injuries (which is all be assured with veteran players) and PK/PP.

  6. Can McQuaid teach these people to be more Aggressive???…….

….. probably not, and not because of any lack of teaching skills.

  7. Very interesting updates on dev camp! And so awesome to see Miss Bessie co-hosting; she knows to say hello at the intro and bye at the outtro, haha! I like' how she 'marks' the mic as "hers" by rubbing her head on it (actually, she probably senses your breath/mark on it and she adds her scent on it to indicate she's part of the family with you!🥰)
