70+ points to negate his massive defensive liabilities, be worth 8.5M and the assets.
If they manage to unload Granlund to SJ the bar gets lower though.
@ DK: I'm sold on the idea of getting Karlsson. This is exactly why rumors sometimes can be fun. It's a combination of being bored, dream away a bit and create new hope, to answer a question you asked us some time ago. I'm trying to imagine what the defensive impact would be for this new Penguins team. Still speculating here, but can I get your view on that?
Remind me again about Karlsson's postseason success. … I'll hang up and listen…crickets
I hope we don’t get him. Another terrible contract that we don’t need right now. He’s injury prone and his defensive abilities are not the best. I’d rather keep our assets and build up the depth of the team.
The Norris is a worthless trophy by now. Most points by a defenseman that refuses to play defense. Great award.
I'll be stunned if Granlund goes to the Sharks for EK. Some other team will shoulder that burden, not SJ. I think the main sticking point other than salary retention is the Pens will probably have to give up Pettersson in all of this. Even a willingness to take Petry means there has to be a significant other player involved that fits SJ's rebuilding plan, Granlund and Petry don't. The Sharks don't want to get that much older with this transaction. And please everyone spare me they can't lose Pettersson nonsense. This thinking that they can get rid of all their problems and get a player like Karlsson in return is silly. In every trade of this magnitude, at least one player actually worth keeping, that some people will be upset with being traded, has to be included. There's a reason the Penguins again have been acquiring defenseman, and Graves fits the stop gap answer to Pettersson possibly being traded. Honestly, I see Pettersson, Petry, next years No. 1 and the 2025 No. 2 going to SJ. I think the Granlund contract will be sent elsewhere in what people are already speculating will be a 3 team trade. Maybe to Chicago with Ty Smith thrown in as a pot sweetener. The Hawks who are very thin at the blueline would love to get someone like Smith. Or who knows, maybe Smith goes to SJ and Petry goes to Chicago for that veteran Gonchar level need that an upcoming young team like that will value.
He wore 77 first time i saw im skate up ice was WOW he was so fast Coffey
What's too much? Nothing. Either the Pens are 100% serious about winning the cup this season, or they aren't. They can't half-a$5 this by thinking about the future. Now more than ever they need to focus on this season, not next, or after that. There's no in between. 3-4 years ago they might have been able to get away with that more conservative approach looking at both ends of things. But not now, not when they pushed their chips into the middle of the table by resigning Letang, Malkin, Sullivan, hired a new PHO and are seriously still talking Cup chances like its not only a possibility, but a real achievable goal. Look, I don't think they have a ghost of a chance even if they do get EK, but if they think they do (which they admittedly do), then they better do everything it takes to see it through, and do everything they can do to make this team the best it can be this season, not worry about the empty cupboard consequences that will probably come with pursuing it. If that's remotely a concern, then they should do a full stop and start looking at what the can get for Letang and Malkin ASAP, and make it about the future only. As it stands, they need to see what SJ needs to get this done and do it, as long as it doesn't make winning this season somehow more difficult. That should be the plan folks, even if it is ultimately the wrong plan.
I still just don't see it. The AAV and term is bad even if SJ eats a couple million a year.
Could you see the Canes, Pens, and Sharks working a 3 team trade?
Pens fans talking themselves out of this guy is nuts. One of the greatest to ever play and we could put him with crosby malkin and letang to win with our guys the last chance we got for a long time. GO, send petry, pickering, a first next year, a second the year after, buyout grandlund and GO
Not a good choice in my eyes. We need defensemen that can play defense. Yes the scoring would be a benefit, but if you score 6 but allow 8, its worthless.
Have to stop mortgaging the future at some point
I hope Oilers trade Drasiaitl for Karlsson so Draisaitl can pull the Sharks to the playoffs and McDavid and Karlsson can put up the best offensive numbers to miss the playoffs in NHL history.
Be the oldest team to win it all, why not. Move him at the deadline and get the picks back if it doesn't work out. The contract will be one year less at that point.
I don't get why people are freaking out about possibly sending two 1st's for Karlsson and maybe even POJ. With the team we have now AND EK65, the playoffs should be a lock, that means those two 1st round picks are not going to be earth shattering needle movers, those two picks are not going to be Crosby and Malkin type players. POJ is a good young player granted, but he is on a pair with a defensive D, so he is our offensive D-man on that pairing, you can't compare him to Karlsson, not to mention we have Ty Smith waiting for that 3rd pair spot.
Once Crosby, Geno & Tanger are gone, we are in rebuild mode plain and simple; we can't be competitive and push for a cup now AND also be building for a time when 87, 71 and 58 are no longer there.
Swing for the fences now, get EK65, at the very least the final years of the big-3 will be exciting and fun with Karlsson in Pittsburgh, even if we don't win a cup.
Is one or two less years of rebuilding worth giving up on a potential final cup push with the big 3 now? I would say no, accept we WILL be rebuilding after they are gone and go for broke now.
I've come around to bringing in Karlsson. Push the chips into the middle for the last few productive years of the core 3.
Forget Karlsson-he's too old, remember Marleau?!??
Last time i heard DK this excited about a D man was Petry, buyer beware
