Yager An Intriguing First Round Pick for the Pens

He was seen as a probable top 10 pick before the season started. His stock dropped, but the Pens could have a steal if he rounds out his game.

  1. Another Sask product. Been getting a lot more of them in the 1st round over the last couple drafts. Excited to see how Yager turns out.

  2. I must be getting old because I am seeing no Jagr references in these comments. Come on people. 🙂

  3. His shot is already NHL caliber. But I can tell you from personal experience (though I didn't get within a million miles of the NHL… or even any semi-pro league) having a laser accurate, rocket shot only matters if you can get into position to use it. That's going to be his biggest challenge, I think.

Solid prospect, though. And desperately needed in the Pens system.

  4. As a Penguins Fan, I didn't like this pick. He is too small and will get ragdolled in the NHL. I wouldn't count on him bulking up enough to survive in the NHL. The Penguins need size and grit and should have drafted Matthew Wood or Barlow.

  5. I personally like seeing the rankings before the draft. Always interesting to see if a team obviously saw something that the “draft experts” didn’t.

  6. The draft rankings are a nice touch. However it could just be a visual on the board while speaking you just jump passed them and go to the notes. It could be a happy medium to the situation

  7. As a Pens’ fan I like it. He first came to my attention when drafted him in NHL23 and, as we all know, if it worked out there it MUST translate to real life! Right?
    Right?!?😅

  8. I really hope they keep him around. As nice as it would be to cap off the old guards' careers with another cup, I'd like to not be where the Ducks have been and are.

  9. Pens fan. Was really hoping for Benson but definitely not disappointed with this pick. Have to see if he takes #29.

  10. I would have chosen Barlow, Wood or Sandin-Pelakka over Yager but can’t say I’m disappointed.
Barlow is a winger with a fantastic shot and ready to play this year – he could have slotted in for Zucker. Wood is a big center with strength and skill, kinda like Malkin. ASP could be the future Letang.

But I assume that the Pens’ scouts have a better understanding of this and foresaw the potential growth of Yager as being greater than the others.

I think we have the oldest team in the NHL and also one of the slowest. I just wish that the Pens had more picks this year and the last few. The core trio have 5 years left max and the Pens don’t have a lot of prospects.

  11. As a pens fan I am super on board with the pick. He was one of the guys I read about throughout the season as someone the pens could look at with their mid-round pick. Encouraged by his skill set and I don't really have much concern about his goals dropping by 6 this season. If you are able to help set up an additional 25 goals while only losing 6 yourself I would take that kind of production. Would like to see him be able to come in as a 3rd line C and then work his way up to 2nd line C after Geno eventually retires.

  12. The one thing that popped out to me from scouts was GREAT WORK ETHIC. That is what I want from a Center going in the first round, really hoping he has a bright future w/ the Pens. Due to the depth at center Pens can be PATIENT w/ him. W pick from Dubas

  13. Anyone who has played Franchise Hockey Manager knows how good Yager and Jarventie can get using elite hockey prospects database lol. Starting to think Dubas plays it too 😂
