The 2024/2025 Defensemen Contract Apocalypse (and why I think Pesce is 100% gone, and probably Skjei too)

Second, let’s talk about our need to make some painful trades.

For all those who are lamenting a Pesce and/or Skjei trade, half of our D core expires next year, and the other half expires the year after. It is imperative that we bring in someone with term to provide stability to our Defense beyond the next year or two.

Pesce and Skjei have both have played themselves into likely raises, which means we cannot hope to extend them AND sign new deals for Chatfield and Slavin and maybe Orlov. There just isn’t room. We know that we have Morrow coming up next year (and hopefully Nikishin too) so those ELCs will help a lot, but we will also have a couple more huge raises to give out in Jarvis and Necas that make them mandatory instead of a luxury.

I think if the TDA deal still happens, it will be announced along with an extension of some type on team friendly terms. I also think that’s why EK is being pursued – he’s expensive, but if we can land him with retention for $8-9m then we at least have him in our Top 2 for the next 4 years and we can build around that certainty.

Bottom line, unless we make moves now to trade some expiring guys and bring in other guys on term (or willing to sign extensions at team friendly rates), then we will face massive challenges in both 2024 and 2025 as literally every single defensemen on the team has a deal that expires in that time frame. I can guarantee you this front office does not want to (and will not) negotiate new contracts with half our defense for two straight offseasons. That means extensions for some (Slavin/Chatty?), and trades for others (Pesce/Skjei?), and likely retirement for Burns, sadly.

  1. I don’t understand what you’re saying here. Pesce isn’t going to get $8 million in the open market. If we can’t afford Pesce then we _definitely_ can’t afford EK.

Still waiting on a 3 way deal with San Jose and Anaheim, where we offer the Ducks a 2nd to take half of Karlsson’s salary. They are below the floor now – but if we offer a 2nd instead of a 5th (or 6th in 2024 and 2nd in 2025), and then offer sheet either K’Andre Miller or Lafreniere (or both) – KM to 1st and 3rd, and Lafreniere to max 2nd. This means that New York is capped out if they match, or gets us more defense…
