Potential Loss of Bergeron and Krejci Lowers Expectations for Bruins

No one is going to replace Bergeron if he hangs up his skates. This could lead to some retooling by the Bruins obver the next couple of seasons.

  1. realist in me says Krejci and Bergeron retire, Bruins struggle all year, hover 3rd place and miss the playoffs then go into a 2-3 year rebuild before they're contenders again which rides out the rest of Marchand's time with the team as well.

  2. I'm not counting out Boston to win the division or expecting them to drop drastically. They'll win a lot of games as long Ullmark is in the net.

  3. I think they will do very well this season. It's still a very strong lineup and I'm certain they are pissed off about how last season ended and are extremely motivated to prove the nay-sayers wrong this season. If Bergeron comes back for another season, or they can conjure a 1st line center by some other means, then they'll be a serious threat to any team in the league.

  4. It'd be great to see some prospects get ice time as the year goes on. Guys like Pastrnak and Marchand didn't emerge from Providence fully formed as all stars, they got their shot on the ice and earned more. Merkulov, Lysell, Beecher, Lohrei, McLaughlin, etc. I know the management needs to keep winning to keep their jobs and so they stacked the roster with veterans on 1 year deals to bridge until next year, but they could keep this thing going for years to come if they really let their young players have a chance to make an impact. Especially since it's highly unlikely they'll be able to acquire anyone via trade without shipping out multiple starters to free up the cap space that a 1st line center would command. Dream of course would be to pick Calgary's pocket and get Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanafin to resign them, but the money for those contracts have to come from somewhere and Calagary has even less space than the Bruins. Unless Don pulls off a miracle, playing their prospects is their best way to rebuild while staying competitive until they get their cap under control in future years. And if they can play younger guys in the nhl consistently while still winning, then Bruins then could afford to trade away some of their redundant players with bigger cap numbers to plug holes later in the year.

  5. Bergeron and Krejci, if they have not decided on their return, are being unfair to the Bruins. Both these players know that Boston would be making some moves at the draft or July 1st if they had confirmation that one or both are not returning. this is something both players should realize. these are billion $ franchises not the local beer league team.

  6. Golly, you’re always in a good mood. Pretty impressive for a fan of both the Canucks and Bruins. Two teams that between them have won one Cup in the last 50 years. The only reason one of them won the Cup was because they played each other.

  7. Great breakdown, although you missed Bussi on the goaltending depth. I think our outlook remains staying in the mix this year for a playoffs, while basically holding out until we can make some splashes in free agency next season. If we end up sucking, those one year contract and expiring contracts will be enticing for teams to take on (Shattenkirk, JVR, even Debrusk or Geekie). I hope Bergeron comes back, being one of the longest serving Bruins ever, the captain of the team, in the 100th season – not to mention he's still one of the top centres in the league. My gut tells me that he and Krejci are done, which as you detailed is a big hit to the centre depth, and will be a huge concern this year.

  8. It’s funny but it feels like they’re in the same position as they were last off season

Will be fascinating to see how they perform after a season where everything went right until game 2 against Florida

  9. gonna be interesting to see how they do if Bergeron retire. They have a great defense and goaltending. Will that be enough to make the playoff ?

  10. Agreed. I did NOT want another fickle Russian. Happy with the pick from the beginning! Go Habs Go!!!!

  11. Center position is definitely the biggest area of concern. I'm not concerned about Zacha at 1C with Pastrnak and Marchand as his wings. The issue is that Coyle is not a 2C. Not to mention, when he and DeBrusk were together a few seasons ago, DeBrusk didn't produce much.

Matthew Poitras is a 19-year-old who could be vying for the 3C position. Word out of development camp is that he's a good 2-way center. What he lacks physically, he makes up for mentally. Plus, Georgii Merkulov led Providence in goals and points, so he might get a solid look at 3LW.

As a Bruins fan since I was a kid in the late 80's, I'm not expecting much this centennial season.

  12. Bergeron still played at a high level last season, he must be ready physically to move on from the pounding.

  13. Boston needs to make the playoffs this year, since they don't have a draft pick next year until the 4th round.

  14. I think Bruins will adjust and be fine. My team maybe not so much but Boston will manage real well

  15. Bruins will make the playoffs!
Hopefully the Bruins & refs will be more consistent in future playoff series.

  16. Bergeron will sign once he has recovered from his back injury like Justin Williams did with the Canes a while back🤞🤞. With Coyle Zacha and Geekie as the top 3 centers that is a good group with top talent like Marchand and Pasta carrying most of the load. All 4 lines need to score so don't be surprised if they resemble the Islanders more this season.

  17. Bergy , Marchy and Looch ?! It sounds like they might have a "showcase season" for the centennial year . I pray Krejci and Bergy stick with it …

  18. They really are in a worse spot than Tampa after 2019, they have managed to win 2 cups in a row, I don't think Bruins will do that

  19. As good as Bergeron and Kredji have been the fact that Bergeron is 38 and Kredji is 37 indicates that they are on the decline performance wise anyway.

  20. If i were them I'd do a quick retool while there old guys are still super valuable. You might be able to move Marchand for a 1st and a young nhl forward, same with Bergeron. If they do it now, they could be a contender again in 3 years.

  21. Best course of action for this team would be to finish bottom 10, get their 1st round pick back from Detroit, get Sweeney fired and reload next summer when they have lots of cap space and the potential to sign Matthews or Aho in free agency
