[POLL] 2023 /r/DetroitRedWings Prospect Ranking Thread – #5 Prospect

Now that we’re past the draft and free agency it’s time for the yearly /r/DetroitRedWings prospect ranking thread! As for how you vote it’s completely up to you: some may weigh ceiling and/or upside the highest, others may prefer a prospect that’s closest to the NHL – there’s no wrong answer on how to vote.

A new poll will be posted every 2-3 days depending on how close the voting is until we finish the top 15 prospects. I’ll include 10~ prospects every poll and will add one new prospect after each poll so discuss in the comments below who you feel should be added next.

Check out the subreddit’s previous rankings here (starting from 2018!): [LINK HERE](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qmkO8YqMlR7TzWDaaWu9yMWKnIDTwNNe/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=112624943015473579853&rtpof=true&sd=true)

**NOTE**: Prospect criteria will be defined using the [NHL Guidelines](https://www.nhl.com/info/hockey-operations-guidelines).

**REMINDER!** Avoid downvoting those you disagree with in the comments, this whole exercise is focused on discussing prospects. People *WILL* have different opinions the farther we go.

**Candidates to be added next**: Tuomisto, Viro, Niederbach, ~~Hanas~~, ~~Buium~~, Savage, Dower-Nilsson(s), James, ~~Buchelnikov~~, ~~Augustine~~, Gibson, Doucet

Lombardi was my vote since 3. I’m expecting all the first rounders to go first because draft pedigree is a thing, but Lombardi has proven more than Cossa, Danielson, and ASP have

  2. I have a feeling Johansson will slip in these rankings and will probably deserve to be higher than he goes, but willy wally here and ASP next for me.

I don’t think Wallinder should be dropping out of the top 5 with his tools and his success in a pro league.

Cossa over mazur, lombardi, ASP, and even wallinder sure is a take. People need to stop thinking he’s elite, he’s not. Augustine is just as likely to be an nhl starter at this point

Could he have a massive year and become a legit AHL starter? Sure. But more likely than not he’s still not even ready for that role and for what will be 3 years post draft (after this season) that is not a good place to be

I love Mazur, I think he has a shot to get minutes this season with injury. For me the real question is the next one…. Lombardi or ASP. Wallander a sleeper here too.

Really surprised Cossa got the #4 spot, his draft spot definitely carrying him a little bit as he’s been underwhelming the last 2 years. He’s still got a very good shot at being a #1, but it’s still a work in progress.

The state of our prospect pool really has changed. When we started doing this there was pretty wide consensus, which to me says we have no depth. Now players very well thought off, such as mazur, are falling to at least 5th.

Man we’re rounding out the top 5 and the next 5 guys still have legit 2nd line/pair upside if not higher. We’ve been burned before but damn, what a system.

Seeing the Wallinder propaganda over the last few polls swayed me. He’s my pick here and then ASP. It gets interesting right around here though. After those two I think you can start to think about the wingers and the Johansson tier in defense, but as someone approaching this from a value standpoint, it’s just hard for me to put a middle six winger up against a 2C (Kasper/Danielson), a potential starting goalie (Cossa), or top 4 D (Wallinder/ASP).

I think the run on Swedish defensemen start now

I don’t get how Soderblom isn’t up there already. Maybe my metric is too “show me now” rather than “maybe someday,” but Elmer is a stud today.

Tempted to vote Ammo here but I did vote mazur for this one.

Wallinder or ASP as our potentially 5th prospect is nuts. So much depth
