At the end of 2017, rookie Slopestyle MTB rider Emil Johansson was on top of the world. In his first full season, he was crowned FMB World Tour champion as a teenager only for his world to crumble around him with a mystery illness.

Having eventually been diagnosed with Epstein Barr virus and Hashimoto’s disease, he has battled his way back to the top of the sport and lines up for Crankworx Innsbruck this week to compete with fellow rider’s Brett Rheeder, Nicholi Rogatkin, Matt Jones and more!

  1. I’ve never really paid much attention to this sport before tbh. Jan 2020 I developed a mystery illness too which was never diagnosed until late September this year. I have EBV as well and it has taken me down a real scary path. A friend recommended this documentary to me and it made me so emotional because I felt so alone suffering from this illness and I have never been sure of what comes next and how to treat the issue. This documentary has given me so much hope and made me feel like I’m not alone, thank you

  2. Hey now watching this in 2022 I'd love to know how Emil is doing now amazing video big well done to him for making that comeback for him his life and his career so much respect for Emil a real inspiration to the world that so many people can learn off thank you so much

  3. Great outcome, late to see emils journey new to wat hing mtb, have family members with hasimotos disease, its really turf, Ray peats work/ideas has helped them improve over time.
What a great outcome to be on top of that disease!

  4. "Can you also hold a Red Bull while looking so sad? "

Red Bull, on Red Bull Bike Channel, to a Red Bull sponsored rider.

What a joke of a company.

  5. I also have the same issues as Emil and also got diagnosed with EBV. Im so amazed that he overcame this.

  6. Emil may no longer want his health to be a topic of conversation and I don’t blame him, but there’s something else at play here: the inspiration and hope that he has handed to every chronic disease fighter around the world that you absolutely can do and be more than just your list of symptoms and medications. It’s something I’ll be holding in mind every time my asthmatic lungs battle another chest infection.

Dear Emil, be your best self but remember that your history is part of what will inspire the next generation of groms. Health absolutely does not have to hold anyone back.

  7. These novel/mystery diseases are most likely due to mandatory injections with experimental substances.

  8. What a truly inspirational and amazing story , we all wish you a long and great career in the sport. Definitely my new favourite rider , you've got this bro 💪

  9. I like how Red Bull surprises their athletes by sneaking them a helmet. I wonder how that works, I assume there’s a lot more than happens after, like meeting your manager and arranging your address for them to deliver red bulls to.
