What Happens Now with New York Islanders Forward, Oliver Wahlstrom?

New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom and AHL goalie Jakub Skarek did not sign their tender offers by Saturday’s 5:00 PM ET deadline. So what happens next for these two players? We discuss the impact this has on their future with the Islanders on today’s show.

Plus, we discuss some too-early predictions national writers are making about the upcoming season concerning the Isles and goalie Ilya Sorokin which seem to contradict each other and still shows how little respect the Isles get from the national media.

And we remember one of the greatest single-game performances in NHL history as part of a very special Islanders Birthday of the Day for Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Lou will be forced to up his offer when Wahlstrom gets an offer sheet rather than lose him and get nothing. Hell, Lou gave Bellows $1.2 mil.

  2. Sounds like ollie is trying to escape lou's island. Probably for the best. Dude had major flags lou ignored when drafting wahlstrom. Wahlstrom probably needs a new start on a team with that stresses offense with skill guys. And vt is still sitting out there 16 days into f a and will probably have to take a one year deal. Lou could have had vt a goal scorer for just cap room. vt would have been worth the one year risk. If vt still has 30 goals in him re-sign him. If its a 15 goal vt now then move him at tdl or just walk away from deal after season. Dufus lou because he can't manage a cap leaves no cap wiggle room for just this scenario once again. Move ollie in a package for a scorer or for whatever isles can get for him. His value is just about at its lowest. Wouldn't even be worth an offer sheet to ollie. Maybe senile lou is hoping for one. Someone could offer sheet ollie and put isles with roughly $387,500 in cap room over the cap. Meanwhile isles off season is getting a big F from the so-called experts. One said 'isles have had a BAD off-season'. That's putting it mildly. On the bright side caps signed two old ufa's, one broken down at 34. F as well.

  3. I dont think theyre making the playoffs either
Not when practically EVERY other team in the eastern conference has improved and we did absolutely nothing aside from get older and staler

  4. Come on Gil,senile Lou gave Ross the boss 1.1 and bellows 1.2million. Wahly is deserving of at least that. Every young hockey player’s dream is to get drafted into the nhl. Just not by the New York islanders. It’s appalling how their treated here.
16 points in 35 games last year before he got hurt. Stats were better than more than half the team! lol

  5. I am quite positive of our season. I still believe in the team with the added pieces of last season. I expect good seasons for Wahlstrom, Fasching, Engvall, Horvat, Dobson, and Romanov. We have the best goalie tandem in the league, and there is lots of experience. We are strapped, but I think we have dealt with it well within that context, even if it cost some long contracts. I know it feels harder to be positive without a shining piece like DeBrincat. It's a make it or break it season for Lou's vision, I feel.

  6. I love Oliver he is huge talent but I think we will realize that when he play for other organization 😞

  7. Perhaps the Wahlstrom situation isn't all that bad. Teams almost always match the offer sheet. When an agreement is elusive, it seems like a lot of teams let an offer sheet set the value of an RFA. I would be shocked if Wahlstrom doesn't get at least 1 offer sheet. I predict 1 or 2 years at $1.2 to 1.4 mil so there is no compensation. I think Yoda would have to match it, and it wouldn't cause any problems. Send the rarely used Johnston down and cap and roster space is fine. Perhaps Yoda has a Ross trade in his pocket already. Yoda won't get much more than a 4th or 5th, but perhaps Ross will get some playing time with a team that needs an enforcer. It's obvious Kuhlman is headed to the AHL, but I don't think Gauthier would clear wavers at that price. IMO, Ross is the cap space.
If Yoda loses his best 'prospect' and gets little or nothing, it will just add to his list of failures in asset management. Yoda does some really dumb things, but he has to realize that Wally is worth quite a bit more than he gave Ross or Bellows.

  8. I mean maybe 1-2 deal to see if he can live up to his potential. I mean hell Lou can just give him 5 million to under perform like Palmeri. Lol

  9. If and it’s a big if he can live up to his hype and get 20-30 goals that would be a beautiful thing

  10. thank you for acknowledging my cousin bryan trottier. i think he put out a new book on his career.

  11. I like Wally but who knows how he's going to come back from his knee injury.

All the more reason they should have never given up Raty in the bo horvat trade. Just fucking dumb.

  12. Lou has ton several good things, but he should have been forced out 2 years ago. He has badly mismanaged trade deadlines due to his selfish quest to win one more cup. He better keep Whalstrom, who is skilled, young, talented, big, physical, and that is something Isles need badly. Skarek is also talented. Wally's problem & why Lou offered him a paycut is he isn't nearing the end of his career.

  13. Gil, we are going to fight if you keep talking crazy about sending Johnston to AHL. Trade Clutterbuck, trade Aho, trade Salo. Plenty of moves to be made that don't put a massively soft team at an even greater disadvantage. Martin doesn't scare anyone anymore.

  14. Hi Gil! Just give the kid what you gave Ross and Bellows. I mean he’s contributed way more than those two together. It just seems when Lou has it in for you—-you’re screwed. He already tried to ship him out it seems. This season is make or break for Whally. He wants to be a “Power forward”. Has bulked up some, I’m sure he’s continued his MMA training. My question is, if this is the style he wants to play, can his body hold up? I don’t know. Regardless, give the kid a fair deal. If she refuses, we’ll then a 💯 all out trade is required. On another note—I don’t know Gil-when Lou gives away the #1 pick come TDL and we get bounced or for that matter-we don’t make it-the owners have got to say “That’s enough” right? I mean right Gil? The rest of August should be quiet—it usually is for the most part. Take care Gil—-great show as always!!

  15. Happy birthday Trottier 🎉 The greatest all around and player to ever play the game!!

  16. I'm shocked Wahlstrom signed a 1 year deal…. apparently for just 874K. I don't know if he qualifies for bonus money. That's a very risky move by Wally.
