Full translation :This is what TVASports.ca was able to learn during a casual discussion with a source who was very close to the action at the National Hockey League draft held in Nashville.
When the Habs stepped onto the podium to claim Reinbacher in fifth place, he screwed up the plan of several formations.
“The Arizona Coyotes claimed Dmitry Simashev for sixth overall, but their man was David Reinbacher, confirmed the source, who preferred to remain anonymous. Next, the seventh-placed Flyers picked Russian Matvei Michkov. I can’t tell you if they liked Reinbacher better, but I know the Flyers liked Reinbacher a lot.”
In eighth place, the Washington Capitals turned to American forward Ryan Leonard. As was the case with the Coyotes, this was apparently not plan A.
“A Caps employee told me: Reinbacher would be taken.”
The Nashville Predators are known to have scrambled to advance to fifth place. General manager Barry Trotz wanted to make a splash in front of his supporters at Bridgestone Arena by making a trade with Kent Hughes.
Many believed that Michkov was at the heart of these Predator efforts. Nevertheless…
“It was for David Reinbacher that the Predators wanted to come forward,” said our spy.
The first impression, not always the right one
Moreover, it was not love at first sight when the Canadiens first met Reinbacher at the “Combine” in Buffalo.
Of course, the Canadians were very fond of the hockey player and had followed him closely during the year. But Reinbacher, nervous and having to deal with the language barrier, was not very comfortable at first.
The first impression was not sensational, let’s put it that way.
To get to the bottom of it, however, the Canadians wanted to meet him again, just to dispel some of the doubts in their minds. A meeting that turned out to be fruitful.
Even the head coach of the Canadiens, Martin St-Louis, was behind this selection. And the hockey man had taken the trouble to watch several matches of the best hopes of the vintage. It is said behind the scenes that St-Louis spoke with great enthusiasm about the game of the Austrian defender.
Martin Lapointe said in an interview with TVA Sports that CH recruiters unanimously supported Reinbacher’s selection. It must be believed that this support went even beyond the amateur recruiting department.

This sounds like typical post draft hype building. “Oh yeah, everyone totally wanted the guy we drafted”, as if that actually means anything. The pick is the pick, feel about it how you want, but these made up stories that come after the draft to justify the pick (ie. Wright and Michkov suddenly becoming locker room cancers) are tiresome.

I’d find it extremely hard to believe that every team picking after us wanted reinbacher more than the guy that they picked

And then they all told this dude

  4. Beefiest_bison

Arizona 100% would’ve picked him, after that who knows.

  5. ZukesFan14

it’s pretty obvious Arizona wanted Reinbacher, which is the reason why Hughes didn’t trade down. I’m not so sure about other teams, especially with Michkov still available, but maybe Reinbacher is really seen as special by most teams.

Did Chantal Machabée ghost write this piece? Seems a little late for damage control, I guess they want to reinforce the positive press that’s been going on since the kid was drafted.

  7. Aabbppll

Still was a mistake not to pick Michkov

  8. For all the chatter about this draft’s depth of quality forwards, the fact remains that top RD’s always have tremendous value and are hard to come by.

Outside of Reinbacher’s individual skills and potential upside, his size+mobility+position was always going to make him a highly sought-after commodity.

  9. Faelysis

He was still no.1 defensemen prospect so it make sense that some team out of the 31 others wanted him…
