  1. I don't think Karlsson gets traded this year. He walked himself into a corner signing his contract. I'm a firm believer in the general 1mil per 10 points scored. The only player I think is worth 10mil is MC Jesus. If Karlsson scored 101 points every season that would be a different story. If he does get traded the value will be horrible. Like taking two bad contracts worth 11 mil for two years and since he will be going to a playoff team a late 1st. I would ask more than the 1st just to take the two bad contracts. Essentially SJS will pay to get rid of him. I just don't see it happening.

  2. The success of this year is 2 fold. First… he didn't have to complete for pp time with burns. 2… he was healthy all year. 2 major things there. He needs that top pp minutes. Wherever he goes… Ottawa? NY island? Not Carolina cuz burns is there lol. Pittsburgh maybe??? Letang is often in and out of the lineup. 1 More stroke and he's out of hockey or even dead. I can see Nashville or Chicago interested. Florida? Maybe??? Anaheim? Seattle? Arizona? Calgary?

  3. I have Karlsson jersey (the home teal one).. I think the fact that he got to 100 points this season and won the Norris trophy will make it a jersey that can outlast his time at the team.

I'm also a Philadelphia 76ers fan and have the Ben Simmons jersey…. can't wear that anymore!

  4. Karlsson and Mike Hoffman was a mess in Ottawa. His skating was severely limited. You could see him trying to get to pucks and he just couldn't reach them. he had been one of the best skaters in the league. It's hard to believe that as a 34 year old that reconstructed foot will continue to hold up. For me he is one of the best offensive defenseman i have seen , when healthy, since Bobby Orr.
That Ottawa playoff run was one of the best runs by a player I have ever seen.

Hard to believe they can't trade him

  5. I think if Pittsburgh really wants to get this done they need to accept the fact the Sharks want value in return and not try to use the Sharks as a dumping ground for players they don't want like Petry and Granlund. Otherwise, I think the Sharks are okay with not trading Karlsson. They're not strapped for cap space; their roster is pretty much set. They're like that guy who walks off the car lot, and the salesperson is stunned they actually left after calling their bluff.

  6. As a pens fan i would hate for us to get karlsson because i know we'd be giving up pickering, Yager and/or a first. And i also think karlsson just wouldnt work with sully well at all. Sully has the pens play that predictable dump and chase zone entry system, karlsson wont be able to get those breakout passed that he's so good at. Itd be like trading all of our future for a guy that will just dump pucks and quarter back the powerplay. (Pens powerplay sucks anyways and karlsson isnt gonna fix it himself)

  7. I never thought I'd see another season like this from Eric Karlsson (post Cooke crippling him with a skate blade). It would be inefficient for the Penguins to go after Karlsson, when they already have Letang. Being already over the cap, that non-existent money would be better spent upgrading their goaltending but it looks like they already misspent for that position.

  8. if he can stay healthy and produce at least 70 points a season thats pretty good

  9. So, a trade to Pitt comes with the same issues as a trade to Carolina in that ek65 will have to compete for ice time with another offensively gifted right-handed defenseman in Kris Letang.

Now, Letang had some health issues last year and Pitt may be looking to reduce his ice time to keep him from suffering another stroke, but based on his play and his drive, I think he's going to be worth his contract. And if he and ek65 both eat 25 min/gm the only issue becomes having left side defensemen who can also effectively eat those minutes.

Both Graves and Petterson were skating about 20 minutes/gm, so maybe this Graves signing makes more sense. I dont think ek65 will see as much time on PK as Letang, but Letang may be the 2nd unit defenseman on the PP. I could also then see Rutta as a piece going back to SJ for cap reasons, given I dont think Pitt wants to pay a guy 2.75 mil for 8-10 minutes of ice time, and Rutta probably would demand more ice time.

I also could see SJ taking on Myers contract from Vancouver for them to retain 2-2.5 mil of ek65's contract. Vancouver would also probably get a depth pick, maybe 4 years worth of 6th rounders to take on that retention. They could clear 4 million in cap space which is basically what they need for injured players to return.

If SJ retains their desired 2.5 mil, that makes ek65 cost Pitt 7 mil, if they move rutta and petry, thats 9 mil off their books, even giving them some cap space, and sj would effectively be moving 9 million off their books. Sj would have to move simek or would likely flip Rutta to account for Myers contract, or Vancouver might even retain 2 mil of his since its only for 1 year.

My guess is, right now its all about that 3rd team. A team willing to say, "we're gonna be not great for the next 4 years so we can eat 2 million in cap for the next 4 years to get some picks."

  10. Its hard to really try and get something like this especially with how kinda flat the cap is only being raised by 2 million. And this guy has had pretty rough injuries but hes coming off an unreal season. But how bad could this drop off be. And hes 11 million a year. At 50% retained thats 5.5 million. You losing quite a bit to clear up 5.5 million right now. My concern is the follow up seaons to this season. Cause this drop off could be huge

  11. Good breakdown about Karlsson. Something else worth noting: SJ had a coaching change this past season that rejuvenated him. Karlsson was dealing with injuries in prior seasons, but he was also disengaged with the previous system. Boughner had a very passive system and the sharks spent 3 seasons trapped in their own defensive zone. Now with Quinn, Karlsson is driving the PP but he is also hitting homerun passes that he was known for. If he stays in SJ he’ll have another strong season…asking price should be even higher.

  12. This whole idea of "Karlsson thrives when he is THE guy" is bullshit imho. My counter point would be that he's a diva, so when he isn't THE guy, he just doesn't care to play to the level he can. U cannot convince me whatsoever that he just HAPPENED to get better once Burns was gone. He turned it on. His contract has single handedly destroyed this franchise from the jump. The sooner we can ditch him, the better.

  13. I think if he goes anywhere itll be the Penguins. Theyre already going to be terrible for a long time once the big 3 retire so they may as well go all in now

Edit: As a Penguins fan I think its a bad idea, its too much cap & im almost positive hes going to drop back down next year

  14. Karlsson and Slavin together would be insane in Carolina, that being said I have no idea who they move to make room for cap space

  15. if karlsson is so good why was San Jose so bad with Karlsson being on the ice more than any other Shark

  16. As a Canes fan I do not like the rumors. Pesce is a solid defenseman. He makes Skjei a better defenseman. That duo is one of the best in the league! Karlsson is not good on defense!!!! Why weaken the leagues top D-core for a guy who is a defensive liability. Karlsson will NOT produce the same in the RBA defense first system! Karlsson will be another Ghost just waiting to get out of Carolina.

  17. In 2018 Erik and his Wife lost their son. As a parent who has experienced a similar tragedy, it took me years to recover mentally. I can't imagine having to deal with that pain while also attempting to stay competitive at the highest level of a professional sport.

I'm so, so glad that he's found his game, and I sincerely hope that he'll continue this upward trend.

  18. I don’t see him getting moved. Only a couple years ago the Shark would have had to pay to get rid of his contract. It’s probably more likely he returns to old point totals, which would make him arguably 4-5 million overpaid. Would be cool to see what he could do with Crosby and Malkin though

  19. As a Cane's fan, I hope we stay well away from this potential trade. With his cap hit over the next 4 years even with retaining to salary it starts putting us on a slippery slope when we have extensions coming down the pipeline that we will need to take care of like Aho, Necas, Jarvis etc. Pass on this trade. D'Angelo was bought out by Philly so bring him in on a one/ 2-year cheap deal and make another run

  20. While the money is problematic, no one should be wary of what Karlsson brings to the table as a player. He went off for 100 points on one the worst teams in the league years after his so-called prime and "career altering" injuries. If a good team can make it work financially and let's him run the show like he did in SJ, no reason there aren't several more 80-90+ point seasons in his saddlebag.

  21. It's funny when a defenseman that makes 11.5 says I just want a chance to win. No you want you crazy salary, you've made your bed now sleep in it. No stanley ever for erik. Watch and see.
