Sharks Off Season Quiet So Far as We Await a Karlsson Trade

Well, I thought for sure when I started this look at all 32 teams that the Sharks would have a trade made by now involving Karlsson. Maybe it’s not in the cards until next summer?

  1. I really don't think Karlsson is going anywhere until next year. I've been saying that since the deadline

  2. I would think that after the next season is over when the cap goes up several million would open the market to several more teams. Sit tight Mr Grier….

  3. this team is treading water until Couture and Vlasic disappear…wonder what it would take to get Hertl out of there…

  4. I've got to give some credence to the rumors involving Vancouver in a 3-way trade, since they are sort of rebuilding/retooling as well. Here goes my mock trade:

To Pittsburgh: EK65 at $7mil/season, Nico Sturm (Effectively clear $4.925 million in cap)
To Vancouver: Pitt 24-27 6th round picks, Matt Benning, Casey DeSmith, Retains $2 million/yr of EK65 (Effectively clear $1 million in cap)
To San Jose: Pitt 24 first (protected), Pitt 25 2nd, Pitt 26/27 7th round picks, Jan Rutta, Jeff Petry, Jeff Carter, Tyler Myers, Ty Smith, Joel Blomquivst (Effectively add $6.625 million)

So, I don't think Eklund or Bordelau spend much time in the NHL this year. Grier has made it clear he wants to develop his players, and he wants them to build a winning culture in the AHL. Last year wasn't that, but after a year of playing together, I think the moves made have said, "We want to have a team on the ice until the trade deadline, and the kids can get playing time after the deadline." San Jose can make this cap work because they can move some players to the AHL that will ultimately add up to the difference between their current cap space and that 6.625.

This also gives San Jose an opportunity to have a really good AHL defensive setup. But this is why I see this as a win/win/win:

Pitt gets its superstar and insurance policy for Letang. They also swap out a more expensive and more liable 3rd line center in Carter for a younger, more defensive-minded center in Sturm. Sturm also has cup winning experience with Colorado. San Jose will like Carter as being available as a mentor for call-ups and young players like Zetterlund and Zadina.

Vancouver gets a replacement right-handed d-man who will cost 1/4 of Myers for the next 3 years, some depth picks over the 4 years of retention, and an upgrade in backup goaltending for Demko. I don't think Benning is better than Myers, but at this point in his career, and the way their season went, I think Vancouver would rather have Benning effectively costing them 3.25 million than Myers 6 million. Also, the lulz of Matt Benning going to Vancouver after Jim left…

And for San Jose, they don't clear cap, but they do take on 2 expiring contracts, in addition to everything else. They end up with a plethora of moveable pieces at the trade deadline, and have 1 more retention available to use on Myers potentially. Playoff bound teams will salivate over a big body like Myers, depth experience like Carter, or some high offensive upside wingers like Duclair, Barabonov, and Lebanc. I imagine that, right now, a lot of the negotiations going on are figuring out where those players might want to end up, once traded to SJ, ultimately, and maybe some stipulations about trading them to division rivals.

I don't see a true double retention on EK65's contract at 50/25. If 50% is retained there won't be a 3rd team involved, or if it is, that team won't be retaining 25% of 11.5 million. But this, to me, seems like a realistic hockey trade. Pittsburgh doesn't really need depth in defense if they've got 2 guys that can play 20-25 minutes a night and be consistent offensive threats. Vancouver doesn't get much better, they also dont get much worse, and have more money to play with this year. And San Jose embraces the full rebuild by having serviceable players on a team of "prove it"s.

  5. Sharks gonna be so bad this year. I’m ready for it. We’re loaded up on trade bait and have definitely embraced the tank. Also we pronounce it Goose 🪿 Chin

  6. Karlsson is unlikely to be traded.
Anyone paying a high price for Karlsson will likely be very disappointed.

  7. I don’t understand the Canes interest in Erik Karlsson..Brent Burns and Karlsson never seemed a compatible situation..two very individual and unique players..each has re-emerged playing on different teams this last season.

  8. I was really impressed by Gushchins 2 games he played, hes small but has a lethal shot and seems to find good shooting lanes easily

  9. Man I did not realize how excellent the names are on this team. When it comes to hockey names, the Sharks are elite. Clearly a contender.

  10. On paper….they actually they actually aren't half that bad….defense is very questionable…weird to see vlassic really slump like this…hard to see this squad being the worst in the NHL, I think they can do better then MTL,PHI, and ARI. As much I want to say ARI will break even….I don't think that's realistic…Should still finish bottom 5 but I like the makeup and direction. The return from karlson will be key…I give them 5 years though to get back….I wonder what the future for coture and hertl will happen because they don't meet the teams needs….might as well stock up on capital, spend in FA and build around new core….once they get the tires rolling you make a big move….like Steve yezermen trading for karlson, not signing a bunch of middle tweener guys for over 4mil. I really think Detroit offeason is highly questionable…please correct me if I'm wrong…. I don't see the difference between kubilak and debrincat besides ADB will score 10 more goals but will let up 20 more goals so not sure what is what here. Really bad trade in my eyes….maybe a fabbri 2nd and 3rd…throw in a 4th just to say so….not happy with Detroit eventhoufh this is a SJ video

  11. My teams are the Sharks and the Pens (family in both places) and my god I don’t want Karlsson on either of my teams he brings down all teams

  12. If what Kaut said about the 'Cuda coaches instructing him to fight are true, I am shocked, More so about only offering him $100k and stashing him the AHL so he couldn't make salary in the NHL.

  13. Karlsson to SEA, DAL, or LV.

Kaut was given a qualifying offer but went back to Czechia and accused the AHL coaching staff of forcing him to fight to get to the NHL.

Gushchin is going to be the surprise this year. All that kid does is snipe goals. I saw him almost pull off the Michigan while skating full speed in an AHL game. Highly skilled.

  14. I saw a ridiculous trade rumour the other day. Couture and Eklund for Lindholm. Even the smallest amount of brain power would realise a rebuilding team isn't going to sell off one of their top prospects, and the sharks don't need to make cap space.

  15. It's funny you mention Mario Ferraro is underrated cause there's sharks fans who HATE how he plays
