O'Reilly is 100% correct. The Leafs are over analyzed and the fans base is only ever in a state of Panic now or can we panic yet. It's really funny as a non-leafs fan to watch. But I imagine it is unbearable as a player. This attitude leafs fans have is starting to leak into other markets. Like Calgary the Flames have an opportunity to change the culture of the team, yet everyone seems to be panicking that they haven't traded anyone yet. So long as everyone is either signed or traded by the dead-line its ok to wait. Everyone ripped into Conroy for the Toffoli trade maybe he is waiting to get the best deals for players. Also there is more than 1 way to change a locker room culture other than trading guys. Maybe the Leafs need to look into that
O'Reilly comes from Ontario. š
Imagine doing what you love to do for a living and getting paid well to do it. Then imagine zounds of idiots screaming at you and worse, every time you make a mistake or even if you didn't and your colleagues made the mistake on any given day.
Being an athlete in any major sport is not a regular job, psychiatric help on speed dial, sleeping pills and other pills, drugs etc if it gets real unbearable.
Short time to make your money, money grabbers and leeches everywhere and it could all be gone if you get unlucky.
Personally love hockey as a sport and as a hobby but there's no way in heck I'd do it for a living, even if I had the talent.
Guy Boucher being hired by The Leafs is interesting. If he is to be the first choice if Keefe gets fired I think it's a mistake. Boucher is a good coach but I can't imagine his style working with the current Leafs roster.
Still disipointed max Domi isn't getting 28 with the leafs
Lennox Lewis had dual Canada and UK citizenship, I think.
Toronto is a train wreck. Ryan OāReilly is spot on! He probably was afraid heād bite the tip of his tongue off. Ryan walked away from his hometown team & dream. Ryan OāReilly didnāt want the stink of āking of losersā smell on his legacy. Look at Coach Keefe & Captain Tavares crying like little girls about Refs. Itās embarrassing.
Should mention they can't buyout Murray hahahah
Honestly, I dont think the pressure in Toronto is the issue. Its the attention. Players cant have normal lives. You cant just walk to the park with your kids and expect to be left alone. I think its especially difficult for guys with families. For a young single guy its probably amazing though.
If you want 2M and to just play where it's "quiet" no team needs you.
Didnt know where else i could take this question hockey guy. Will it be possible to see oliver moore maybe get some time in the blackhawks AHL team this year the rockford icehogs? Or will his commitment to u of minnesota take up all his next season?
RIP Mr Hammond. My condolences to your family, friends, fans, and teammates
F's in the chat
This is what I don't get about the Canada vs USA markets. People often rag on Bettman and the NHL being last place as a sport in NA, but at the same time, we have people and players saying "Oh it's great playing south, i'm anonymous out there". That wouldn't happen if hockey was more popular/higher in the sports market. So do players want hockey to succeed, or are they content with being nobodies? You can't have both.
Boston Red Soxs, Chicago Cubs, Dallas Stars, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks. The Toronto Maple Leafs are not alone in this.
As a Leafs fan, I can totally understand O'Reilly's take on it and I wish him the best.
Stamkos helped a lady change her tire 5 miles from the arena, she had no idea who he was. Thereās an AM sports radio show and the evening news sports guy talks about the Lightning. Couldnāt be any different from Toronto.
Who is Cooker?
all Kurashev & his agent have to say is: "Davidson signed old & useless players such as Foligno & Perry to one-year $4M deals, so, show me the money!"
Back when the leafs struggled to get free agents part of the pitch was that Toronto was a place only for the best because many great players kept saying they had no interest in signing because of the spotlight in toronto. Back when Tim Connolly was the biggest free agent center the leafs could get Burke would try to sign guys by appealing to their ego because it is harder to play in toronto. You need a guy like Matthews who thrives in the spotlight, who wants to be the best and play where people care the most.
That's also why it drives me crazy when I hear the media attention Toronto gets spoken of as this unfair advantage the leafs have. It's nothing but a detriment and I don't know a single leafs fan who doesn't hate the toronto media with a passion. All it does is drive away free agents, and raise players cap hit. The media spent 3 months speculating about Marners contract and each day they speculated the number went up…until he got paid and now the media gets to talk about how much of an overpay it was. As Leafs fan the only thing hockey related I hate more than Toronto media is Bettman himself.
Ryan O Reilly is still gonna give you avg. 60 pts for 3 seasons. And be a playoff force. Though he wasn't center of attention in Toronto, you make some good points. Even going back to his time in Colorado- never cared for captaincy. On Blues same thing. And it took away from his game. He comes across as a captain because of work ethic, and those teams couldn't help but give him the C. Now that he's worn out the C. I look for him to have a great season then wain off to avg. 60pts over 3 seasons
The pressure in any market is higher when teams are bad for years & barely win in the playoffs
Players need thicker skin. Such babies
Nate Thompson is the kind of player I watch hockey for. No way will you see him spoil an ironman streak like that sissy George Parros.
Thompson made every Alaskan proud. Him and Scott Gomez made a lot of kids up here realize we actually did have a shot of making it to the NHL, despite his ups and downs throughout his journeyman like career.
I can understand OāReillyās reasons.. Iām a NewYork Yankee fan and they have the same problem in Baseball.. though in Canada.. Hockey is not a sport.. itās a religion.. and that makes it rough.. probably worse than the Yanks have it. I grew up on the US/Canada borderā¦ We were not as bad.. but it did bleed over into Buffalo.. and in some cases like the mid-western teams.. not many more options for sports.
So very sad to read about Mike Hammond today. He truly helped GB get back into the first tier of international hockey. š¢
I was with you Shannon up until you said , " if your looking to win , Toronto Is high up on the list " no its not Toronto does not win , 1 win past the 2nd round in decades
The ZSCLions don't play inthe Swiss League they play in the Swiss national League, the Swiss league is the second tier league inSwitzerland it is not the same
Take a good look all, that's what NHL jersey are going to look like if fans and YOUTUBERS don't stand up, make a stand and save the jerseys for the game they profess to love from all the adds. The digital one's as well! I went to a Hockey game and a commercial broke out!
iāve seen zero improvement in kurashevās offensive game in the past 3 yrs in chicago and only a very slight improvement on the defensive end. iād send him to any team that shows interest. canāt wait til heās gone
It's no secret Toronto needs a new coach almost everyone out coached him.
Iām gonna miss Grant with the Ducks
Blackhawks have the money
Shannon trying to solicit Dallas as a āout of the spotlightā destination š§
Hockey players are weird about media. Is there more pression in Tor/Mtl/Edm etc? Sure but thats how stars are born.
Look at the NBA, the top player dont shy away from the big market, they want to be stars, they want people to talk about them.
ROR cant handle negativity. Couldnt in Sabres or TO. Blues loved him and he preformed. Needs to grow up
Glad we got Dorofeyev signed. Kid has a shitload of potential. Came in and scored his first like 5 games in row during the regular season. Helped us come back in that game against Minnesota towards the end of the regular season. Really fun to watch.
Thank you for mentioning Mike Hammond, such tragic news and a huge loss to GB hockey š¢
Played against Mike Hammond when we were kids. You had to always know where he was when he was on the ice. He created offense every shift. Sad to learn he has passed. RIP.
rough news with Mike Hammond, glad to see this acknowledged
Fwiw. Nate Thompson did play this season, 30 regular season and two playoff games, in a veteran leadership role for the Ontario Reign. But that's the AHL, and those games 'don't count,' eh?
How come it's only hockey that's got too much pressure to play in a city?
Don't hear this about NFL, MLB, NBA players…
Never heard anyone say, don't wanna play for those dodgers, too much pressure
Or don't wanna play for those cowboys, too much pressure
