  1. They get paid, too lazy to show effort for the cup. Why bother winning a cup?
In toronto you already have the fame, money, etc. What more does a cup give you? This is why they prioritize golf.

  2. “Nobody on this team has ever taken a discount.”
Not an accurate statement .. what you mean to say is, the 2 other young talented forwards didn’t take discounts

  3. Exactly this. Why would he take a discount? So he can stay with the Leafs and do what? Get his ass kicked in the 2nd round? There’s a lot of teams he could do that with that would probably fork up $10 mil.

  4. I would not take a discount if marner and Matthews dont do,, it, to me he is worth 10 million i like willy he worth ever penny or trade him

  5. Fine. Ask for it.

And then get traded because you're too costly.

And win a cup wherever you land anyway.

  6. McDavid > Matthews. Theres no debate to be had there. McDavid has 75 points in less than 50 playoff games (49 gp). Matthews isnt even ppg for the playoffs, he has 44 points in 50 games. You really going to tell me that McDavid blew it for the Oilers this year? He had 20 points in 12 games this year. Matthews could barely stay ppg this year. McDavid suffers from a team that has mostly incompetent defense and horrible goaltending. Whats Matthews excuse? The Leafs have been pretty good defensively, and while I wouldnt call their goaltending phenomenal, its definitely better than the Oilers. Not to mention the Leafs have better 5v5 depth than the Oilers, especially after the deadline adds. To say that Matthews should make as much as McDavid if not even more than McDavid is delusional. Put up stats comparable to McDavid in the playoffs and then we can maybe start having that conversation.

  7. Trade nylander with muzzin and murray. Get some deph players and picks back.. have som room to new players.
Or do it with marner. Sign nylander extension

  8. He outplayed his previous contract too. Another reason for a raise. I think he’s worth 9.5 in 2023. Easily. And raise the cap already!

  9. Ask for it for sure. His production has matched or in some cases been better than the 3 making 10 plus.

  10. And so the cycle repeats itself until the end of time. None of the core players deserve 10+ Million/season when they haven’t won a goddamn thing to earn it. You earn 10+ by showing up each and every single game INCLUDING playoffs. Every guy needs to take a major discount if this team has real plans of winning the ultimate prize. Austin Matthews is no exception to the rule. He hasn’t earned his paycheque. In fact, he hasn’t even come remotely close to earning it. He is light years away from earning what he deserves.

  11. How about Nylander clicking his heels together and asking the Mighty and All Powerful Oz, for the ability to consistently show up on a regular basis. OVER RATED!!!

  12. Sign and trade Nylander ASAP. Spending wildly on players has not done the Leafs any good whatsoever! It has only caused them problems. Winning one playoff round in 5 or 6 seasons is totally UNACCEPTABLE!

  13. Reilly was projected to make 9m if he went to free agency, San Jose offered JT 14m and the islanders offered JT 12m, so he technically took a discount.

  14. The reality is that teams have internal cap structures and Tavares, Marner and Matthews set theirs with their first contracts. Willie is at the same level they were at if not better when they signed those contracts, if I was him and I was the only person not getting overpayed all this time I'd be asking for 10 as well

  15. Toronto fans mentioned if he wants to win, he should leave some money on the table. My thing is Toronto has struggled to get out of the first round. Winning on this team has been a while since it has been a thing so he can always go somewhere else to get his money and win.

  16. I think you can have two highly paid centers but not two highly paid wingers he can be the guy on another team
