What Are Some Potential Erik Karlsson Trade Packages?

Erik Karlsson confirmed over the weekend that he has spoken to several teams about a potential trade. Start by analyzing his interview with Adam Johansson of Expressen and some of the key items to take from it, including speaking with the Seattle Kraken and Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Next, review some of the potential trades from each of the prospective teams and what the return could be. Start with the Penguins, and if a few picks, Ty Smith and Samuel Poulin would be enough for Mike Grier. Then how the Carolina Hurricanes could off some more intriguing prospects in Jackson Blake and Jack Drury with the same pick package? Next, if the Seattle Kraken would be willing to offer Shane Wright in a trade if they don’t have to offer any draft picks? Finally, would the Erik Karlsson for William Nylander one-for-one destroy the internet?

  1. Maybe just more rumors but I heard Karlsson doesn't want to play with Burns. So I don't really see Canes a potential trade candidate

  2. He gave us one good season during our worst season 😂 please trade him and he's the king of the turnovers

  3. Sheng said his PIT trade proposal is based on the return for Burns last year. A few issues with that: Sharks were in salary cap hell, Burns had a good year in CAR, Karlsson won the Norris. Soooo, Mike Grier shouldn’t accept the junk coming back from PIT.

I’d also like Shane Wright. SEA has a much better prospect pool than PIT, hopefully something materializes there…

  4. I would be extremely surprised if any of these actually occured in a form that was this beneficial to the Sharks.

  5. If Karlsson is going to be traded we should retain half his cap hit to maximize his value. We won't need that money with Burns and Vlasic coming off the books. It's the best rebuild move you can make. Even looking at it from the ownership point of view of paying someone to play somewhere else, it will get the Shorks back into the playoffs the fastest, making up for that lost money.

I don't like the Nylander trade at all. He is not worth 9+mil/year and his time line doesn't fit well into the rebuild. Of course unless he was signed and traded for more assets.

  6. Erik Karlsson is amazing…offensively. As a defender he's well below average analytically. It's frustrating that a guy that bad defensively wins the Norris trophy for best defenseman. He's an offenseman…not a defenseman. Last season while he was allegedly the best "defenseman" in the league…Karlsson was in the 5th percentile in defensive analytics. Ideally Karlsson needs to be paired with a solid defender like Slavin to really shine as half of a solid pairing in the NHL on a contending team.

  7. I would like to see Ty Smith in San Jose. Pittsburgh sent him to the AHL because they couldn't afford his contract after they traded John Marino for him. So, it wasn't based on his play just that they screwed up their books. From what I hear Pittsburgh doesn't want to give up Petterson. I think another young player like Drew O'Connor would be better. The Pens don't use the younger players anyway. The problem is they don't want to give up anything of value they just want to off load salary like Granlund. I don't think Grier should give into that. People already have criticized his other trades, if he gives up Karlsson for Granlund people will lose it.

  8. why would the Leafs do this without San Jose retaining 50% of Karlsson's contract? The Leaf's have NO CAP SPACE left to give Willy a $3 million raise, so why would they take on Karlsson's contract that is $4.5 million higher?

  9. Their are other players on the Sharks the leafs are eyeing Mario Ferraro and Kevin Labanc and Tomas Hertl or Logan Courture. The leafs have said that their 1st round picks in 2024 and 2025 are up for trade in trade rumors and a player on the leafs the sharks have tried to get since the leafs drafted he is TY Volt in the trade rumors.
