Can’t help but wonder if Patrice Bergeron’s retirement makes the end feel that much closer.

  1. While I agree that the only realistic solution to ridding themselves of Granlund's contract is to buy him out, I'd like to hear who the source is who told you that was their intent going into this offseason. The only thing we ever heard from Dubas in regards to the topic was that they didn't want to buy out any contracts and didn't see it as a good way to do things. Seeing as how you don't have the insider ties to FSG like you may have once had to the Lemieux group, who could this someone be?

  2. In regards to Crosby. He definitely comes off as the kind of player (like Lemieux) who'll call it quits when he decides he's not able to play at a level he's comfortable with. If his contract ends and that is about the same time he's feeling it, he'll retire. If he feels he's still got something left at that point, he'll sign a one-year contract and keep doing that until he's done. There are players out there like Ovechkin, who'll keep playing well past their expiration date as long as there's an ulterior reason or motivation that gives them purpose, like breaking the goal scoring record, or Bourque who needed to win the Cup before calling it quits even if they had to prop him up to do it. Then there are the hockey lifers who were never considered that great to being with, and will play as long as they can skate and still collect a paycheck, but Sid and players like him who've been there and done everything there really is to do, don't think like those players, and I can't imagine there's a stone out there worth turning over that would have him play one season longer than he feels he needs to. Honestly, If he were told the future and it didn't have him winning another cup, I bet he'd retire as soon as his contract expired even if he had gas left in the tank.
