Jeff Paterson on how the Aho contract impacts Pettersson’s extension with Canucks, centres to target

Matt and @rinkwidevancouver co-host Jeff Paterson talk about Sebastian Aho’s rich contract extension and how it relates to the Canucks getting Elias Pettersson extended. They discuss the high and low ends of what Pettersson could make on his new deal, and compare him to Aho and other players in the same contract vicinity. They also discuss the Montreal Canadiens as a potential trade partner for the Canucks given the former’s surplus of centremen.

  1. First of all, Aho is a really good player, and he did leave maybe 0,5-0,75 on the table. But Pettersson is better in most categories, not by a lot, but better and he is also younger and doesnt play with the same calibre of team. If they keep it below 11, I would be surprised. And if they wait and he has another +100 point season it will start with a 12.

I also agree with Matt regarding will the team be good enough, and my opinion on that is no, the door for Vancouver to win the cup withing EPs prime is already gone based on the fact that their prospect pool is just awful.

The problem with the argument about EP taking less to ice a better team is that nobody else on the Canucks have so why should he? In hindsight Hughes did, but not at the time of signing since he came out of a mediocre year. Its kind of like the Nylander debate in Toronto, why should he take less when AM wont, or Marner for that matter.

    Trade Boeser/Garland for Dvorak

  2. They capped n cant make playoffs with EP at 7M – hes gonna be asking for 10M or 11M?!?!?!? – at this rate this team is never gonna have more than 8 good players on their 23 man roster.

  3. Because another player in another market gets x amount of dollars, that doesn’t mean the team should listen to the agent make comparisons with that other player and nod in agreement. The Canucks should be hard negotiators.

  4. Sekeres is basically an agitator, whether naturally or by design. If by design, he’s not the first in the Vancouver market. Before him there was Neil McRae, Tony Gallagher and David Pratt. Churn. It’s all about churn.

  5. I'd be wary about committing that kind of loot / term to a player that still (and will always) has a slight build. The fact that they haven't made much effort to surround him with some size and grit despite his value is also concerning.

  6. Now you guys are talking sensibility. With the cap going up and percentage of the cap. And not prioritizing Elias or building a winning future around him … Long term has to be off the table by both sides. Especially knowing the OEL is going to cost the Canucks 50% of the predicted future cap growth. They can't sign Elias and build the team. Elias is an $11mill player to the Canucks.
Same as the Bo Horvat situation. Elias knows this. They were close friends. Near trade deadline this year if the Canucks aren't in playoff contention, get something for him while you can because the Canucks can't afford to rebuild and re-sign him long term. If traded to a contending team, Elias might sign longterm in the 10's, but not with the Canucks. He is too valuable to the Canucks to sign in Vancouver for very much under $11.
If the Canucks resign him for his value to the team and long term, they will continue to be capped and no future.
It's a tough pill to swallow. But they bet on OEL and JT Miller for the future. To keep Elias, you have to drop Boeser and another player like Beaulivier. So, bet on Elias and have a lack of great top 6 and depth, or trade for a future and have a bit of cap space.
They want and need cap space right now. They just can't afford Elias. JT plus OEL are where the money is sewn up. Lotsa shuffling required to keep Elias. Less shuffling and more immediate retool by moving him. Just like Horvat.
Throw in no trade clauses and Elias becomes difficult to move in the future just like Tavares, so long term contracts with Elias just don't work in favour of the Canucks. They will never be able to afford to build around him and they will tie their hands further if trying to keep him.
Sadly, it's best for the player and for the team just to move on with their futures and hope for the best in new surroundings and with the returns while he is at his highest value in the market coming off a 100 point season, low wages, and with youth on his side. A mutual and pleasant separation would be preferred over a repeat of the Horvat situation. Maybe in his twilight years Elias would come back. Like a Trevor Linden situation. The Canucks got a good return for Linden and got him back later. That's the best case scenario.

  7. There looking for a center and they let BO go and keep signing forwards they are really messed up 😂

  8. If the nucks are lucky he signs for 10m but if there not in a playoff spot by trade deadline I feel like he would be asking 11+ if he’s replicating his season and let’s be honest Pettey is just coming into his prime he has many amazing seasons left I hope they sign him asap

  9. If the canucks can move off the Myers contract would it be worth seeing what toews wants for a year contract . Good mentor and still 40+ points a year.
