Are The Toronto Maple Leafs The Best Team In The East?

On Episode 111 of the Gluttons For Punishment Podcast, Michael Lepore and Anthony Bruno discuss whether the Toronto Maple Leafs are the best team in the Eastern Conference. They also give their thoughts on Ilya Samsonov being awarded a 1-year, $3.55 million contract in arbitration, Matt Murray being placed on LTIR, Patrice Bergeron’s retirement and how it affects the Boston Bruins’ playoff chances and the Atlantic Division playoff race, and how Sebastian Aho’s 8-year, $9.75 million AAV contract extension affects Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

  1. Notice how no other team is complaining. It’s just their fans (expected) and Toronto Media (completely expected) who are doing all the bitching and complaining, aka Steve Simmons and others. Other teams fans whining, I get that, they hate the Leafs but that’s fine, that’s sports. But here we have Toronto Media claiming something’s fishy, but honestly, we expect no less from them. If the Leafs cured cancer, Toronto Media would complain because they didn’t cure it sooner. That’s their complete raison d’être, no matter what the Leafs do they will slam them regardless.

Great job as always guys! Fuckin’ right that the Leafs can use their financial clout, for once!

  2. lol Matt sissy girl Murray claiming off season injury after being cleared to play is "legit"? Homer much guys? Imagine how PO'd Ottawa management is as they lose cap space for retained salary on this bum…while the Leafs cheat their way out of it. Personally, I think it's hilarious. Obviously neither of the Leafs or Sens will be winning anything…as usual, but it shows without a doubt what a joke of a league the NHL is. Now go pay Auston "playoff choker" Matthews $13.5m and William "floater" Nylander $10m. hahaha

  3. You guys are funny. I think you have been driven to madness by the Leafs. When are you going to realize that Matthew's only cares about the paycheck and is going to squeeze every penny he can wring out of the Leafs. The leaf on his chest means nothing to him. Wake up and smell the coffee.

  4. Patrice Bergeron is the kind of leader Toronto needs to win a Stanley Cup. The guy plays a 200 foot game, puts his body on the line for the team and took less money to help the team win. Unless the Matthews, Marner and Nylander adopt this mentality, Toronto is not winning the Stanley cup with them as the main guys.

  5. Leafs couldn’t win a cup without a salary cap either lol. Even being able to spend 200 million on contracts while my Sabres were at 20 million

  6. I think a cap is a good thing to keep from rich teams just buying success like in Soccer, but it frustrates me that tax differences between the US and CA is a factor. I wish they’d make the cap higher in line with inflation, and have the cap be based on after tax earnings rather than before tax, to level the playing field.

Curious what you guys think about the various ways the Leafs will become cap compliant. The way I see it is, we come into the season either “less good”, or “less deep”, depending how they make it work.

  7. Listen, enough with the bull, nylander got to go . Not sure but what about nylander, Brodie something if needed for cap for lindholm , tanev and zadorov or backlund. That’s one. Maybe there are other great trades that make the leafs better on defence and similar or better up front.

  8. I’m trying to figure out what’s better. The Leafs after making all their offseason moves or my new workout gear from Ten Thousand? 🤔

  9. As is not a chance. The defense needs work for sure. Brodie out, new right hand D with grit to play with Rielly. Then at least 1 more gritty defensive D in your 2nd or 3rd pair and then maybe we can talk. But to add that without losing offence up front to stay under cap will be almost impossible. Good luck Treliving.

  10. The leafs weren’t the best team last year and they just got worse this offseason. How the hell do you think they are the best in the east. Reaves and Domi make it better. Bertuzzi is the only half decent pick up and he’s only decent. They lost a lot more.

  11. Carolina and Florida are the only real threat to being stronger than the Leafs next year. Maybe the Devils but I kind of expect them regress from last years winning record.

  12. Nylander isn’t a centre, doesn’t kill penalties, etc
    He’s worth 9mil period
    Mathews is worth 13
    Marner is worth 10.5
    Tavares is worth 8

  13. I can’t speak for Buffalo since I don’t follow them as closely, but feel like the Ottawa take is a bit off.

Ottawa wasn’t really bad at 5v5 last year, they just couldn’t finish. Most models had them as a top10 team at generating chances at 5v5 and even strength. Reason it looks worse is do to, frankly, bad luck.

DeBrincat and Batherson both were snake bit all year and couldn’t finish, and Joseph was similar but to a lesser degree. Factor in missing Norris most of the year (their best finisher) and it was just a frustrating watch.

Also the defence SHOULD be much better this year. They upgraded from Zaitsev to Chychrun, let Holden walk in favour of JBD getting his minutes (who has put up great defensive numbers in the NHL so far), and Hamonic will likely be used in a platoon role on the 3rd pair instead of the 2nd pair. Plus another year of Sanderson getting used to the league, and Zub has become one of the better pure defensive Dman in the league.

Are they a playoff team? Maybe, maybe not. But it should be a lot closer then people think. Wouldn’t be surprised if both Buffalo/Ottawa make playoffs.

  14. How is Murray owed $8M when he has one year left on his contract paying around $4.6M…..??

  15. i love the leafs fans early optimism even though we all know the season will end with their soft robotic captain leading them into the abyss once again 🤣
