Why Edmonton Trading Jeff Petry To Montreal Wasn’t Actually THAT Bad After All | NHL Trade Trees

Steve Dangle takes a look back at the 2015 Jeff Petry trade that saw the Edmonton Oilers offload the defenseman for draft picks. Everyone likes to look back at this as a colossal mistake by the Oilers but Steve explains why it may not have been a bad deal after all!

  1. Think of this now with the Keith trade: by trading away Jeff petty, the oilers would go on to trade for Duncan Keith.

  2. Jeff Petry is a bum, so glad Edm traded Him. I called for that trade after first game of the season that year. Skating backwards and letting the forward get to the top of the blue circle and shot. Just gave so many goals away. Did the same thing this year in the playoffs. Guess he never learn anything many years later.

  3. So they finally got Talbot and Jones from that trade.

    Where are they now?

Talbot traded to Flyers VS Anthony Stolarz
Stolarz played 6 games with the Oilers then sign with the Flames.

Jones was recently traded to the Hawks for 150 years old Duncan Keith who got a 5,5M cap hit…

I'm not even an Oilers fan and I'm crying…

  4. To be fair, what would the Habs could've done with that 2nd pick. lmao
They lost nothing and won one of the best defenseman of the league.

  5. Ah, not so fast there Dangle, that conditional 4th which turned into Jones was just used to acquire Duncan Keith. We shall see how this all really ends, lol

  6. Caleb Jones was traded this year with a conditional fourth round pick to Chicago for Duncan Keith. I don't know about you all but I believe Chicago should have retained about $2 million of Keith's cap hit. Maybe $1.5 million. But yeah, Holland shouldn't have taken the whole cap hit on Keith's contract. That was what allowed Seattle to take Adam Larsson in the expansion draft, then sign him for $100k per year more than what Holland offered him.

Edit: Keith decides to call it a career following Edmonton's third round loss to the Colorado Avalanche, so Caleb Jones' branch is finished. So unless that 7th rounder is traded, if he is still a part of the Oilers organization, the Oilers side of this tree is done. And unless Montreal trades Petry somewhere down the road, Montreal's side is done as well.

  7. May need to do an update down the line, now that Caleb Jones got traded to Chicago for Duncan Keith…

  8. Jeff didn't want to resign with Edmonton so the trade made sense. I love him as a Habs but Edmonton did not do too bad either. Thanks Steve

  9. Edmonton ultimately won the trade because in addition to anything on the trade tree this is part of what helped them win the draft lottery to get McDavid.

  10. Looking at where this trade tree stands now is fascinating.

Caleb Jones was traded for Keith; who retired; and Tim Söderlund; who terminated his contract to play in the swedish league.
Stolarz signed with the Ducks as a free agent.

Meanwhile, Petry (along with Poehling) traded to the Pens for Matheson and a 4th in 2023.

  11. Why is it that every trade tree video shows a goal against the NYI? It doesn't matter what era or what team, there's a goal against the NYI? Is there a hater doing the clips?

  12. UPDATE THIS PLEASE!!! With petry getting flipped for Mike Matteson to Pitt and Caleb Jones getting traded in the Duncan Keith deal!!

  13. I know that it has only been 2 years, but on the Oilers' side there have been a couple of additional trades.

  14. BREAKING 7/16/22- Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling were traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins by the Montreal Canadiens for Mike Matheson and a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

  15. I normally can't stand the videos of this Leafs fan but you known what? I'm having a good day and this was pretty entertaining. Might give the guy another chance after all!

  16. How long before you'll revisit a trade tree? This one continues on both sides.

  17. And let's not forget the lottery implications of this trade. Let's say this trade never happens, Petry goes on a tear, and the Oilers get an additional 6 points in 2014-15. They rise to 4th-worst, and the team that actually finished 4th-worst falls to 3rd-worst and wins the lottery. So Connor McDavid is now a Leaf. How does that make you feel, Steve?
