What should the Leafs do about their William Nylander dilemma? Corrado and Button debate

The Maple Leafs have a dilemma on their hands with William Nylander. As the star forward enters the final year of his contract, should the team lock him in long-term or let him play out the year and take their chances? TSN Hockey’s Frankie Corrado and Craig Button share their thoughts.

  1. Trade him seems like the best thing to do but I don't see anyone giving great value when he wants more money than he's worth

  2. Even if Nylander doesn't sign, I'd still say don't trade him. A team thats supposed be a cup contender shouldn't trade away one their best players.

  3. Time to trade him! Sorry fellas, I like security and certainty, and while I have that for this season, I don’t beyond! He’s not worth more than Tkachuk, or Aho, if he isn’t willing to sign ( he should’ve been signed already) then see ya!

  4. If he refuses to be reasonable, keeps playing hardball, and won't budge from a reasonable number, then the team needs to trade him and avoid getting nothing in return. Future draft picks need to understand that the team won't be held hostage by greedy players.

  5. I like Nylander too but you can't have four guys making over 10m on the same team and expect to win a cup. What would you rather have; a Nylander or a Domi and Bertuzzi? The gap in talent between the top and bottom six isn't terrible, but it isn't good either. And this team really should be shoring up its defense. This team is not going to win a cup for at least another 2 or 3 years.

  6. In 2025 No Nylander no Tavares no offence? When the Leafs overpaid for Tavares they were the 3rd highest scoring team in the NHL. What they need is “Defence”. For those that say the Leafs were top 10-15 in the League Miss out on one very important stat, they were “2nd Worst” in the League for giveaways/turnovers in their own end. All one had to do was watch 3 players, Holl, Reilly and Brodie to see why.

  7. Simply do nothing until the March 2024 trade deadline and a playoff bound team will trade their No. 1 draft pick for him as a rental. I am sure Willie will do his best to play good hockey in his walk year.

Do not resign him for over $8.99 M for 5 years.

  8. trade him. its been very clear the leafs can't go deep in the playoffs with their over paid fluff four. nylander should be the first of the four to look at trading .. the cap makes it very difficult to pay so much for these four players . who never show up for the playoffs. hopefully they can get a good stay at home defenseman for nylander. leafs are hurting on defense

  9. Nylander is a game breaker and a proven playoff performer more so than matthews or marner if I was the GM I’d do anything I could to keep someone like him

  10. LEAFS ARE 12 MILLION DOLLARS OVER THE CAP! HE'S GONE! who else are they going to trade to get under the cap?

  11. There is no way they can afford to pay another player more money. We need to get rid of at least 1 and he is the best trade bait we have , plays 0 defense and is the easiest to replace his stats. Make a hit or play some defense or win a cup then they deserve a raise. To give people raises for underperforming and losing in the playoffs every year is the reason the Leafs have not won a cup in 56 years. This is the worst team in the NHL yet are 2nd in revenue, how is that even possible? I stopped wasting money on Leafs over 10 years ago because I realized this organization is a joke. Until revenue starts going down the owners will never care enough to make changes needed to win a cup . Fire Shanahan , the Shanaplan went down in flames for 5 years. Or continue watching a pathetic team do great in regular season and disappear in the playoffs with yet another early exit. They actually thought Brodie and a 40 year old Giordano and Holl would win in the playoffs ffs really and they brought back that garbage coach lmao.

  12. Any player in the league rates change because of the team offering…Toronto would get you to sign a lowball offer saying be loyal to the team….and then try to get you end your career with LTIR because they see another shiny baubles they want to chase……they have shown this to the league…how do you not see this from Toronto. It's very obvious that no one wants to sign long term with you without a significant overpayment. I'm confident that if another organization treated it's players this way your analysts would be screaming it from every available source. I'm sure Frederic Andersen has as many injuries as Murray, yet Carolina signed him to a contract commensurate with his current abilities. Allowing a loyal player to finish his career to the best of his abilities.

  13. I rather Nylander than Austin Matthews!

William Nylander performs when it matters the most, in the playoffs!

  14. What should the Leafs do about their dilemma of being the Only Original Six team to not have won a Cup since the NHL had six teams?

  15. TRADE HIM, it is not a dilemma, the fact that they still have him is UTTER stupidity on their part. They have cap problems and need a good overall player. He is a good offensive player but a horrible overall player as he constantly gives up the puck and is unwilling to fight for the puck. Why his +/- SUCKS. TRADE HIM!

  16. The fact that Hogtown is the only original 6 team that hasn’t won a cup let alone made the finals since the first expansion is shambolically sad but hilarious! Here’s to hoping tranna makes it 57 years without a cup! Lay it on the liiiinne multicultural cesspool🤣😂🤣💙🤍🍁🤡🤡🤡🤡

  17. why would you not trade Nylander now for a some kind of top 4 D-Man? obviously Treliving would need to trade others to get under the cap, but you cant let him walk @ the end of the year for zip? Yes you could trade him @ the deadline, but if the Leafs are in a playoff spot at that time, no way the Leafs trade him then, and then he walks …trade him now.

  18. Easy trade him for a TEAM player. You already have three other highly paid individual players that has not got you past the first round
