Iron Mike Keenan, Darryl Sutter, and Babcock and coaches from that era are from completely different backgrounds and generations than current Gen Z players. These coaches were brought up from working class/rural settings whereby players today are from affluent, suburban settings who’ve had various skills coaches, psychologists, and nutritionists since the age of 6-7.
These “kids” are surrounded by Yes Men from Day One and expect this throughout their careers. Don’t like how your coach is playing you? No problem, we’ll switch teams and/or complain loud enough/politically leverage to have your coach switched.
Hockey skills have completely overtaken and lapped hockey “grit”.
Player Empowerment is is full effect in the NBA, the NHL is following in its footsteps; the news that McDavid’s agent is now the Oilers’ CEO is another big step forward in this.
Babcock is a dinosaur in this league now. Right or wrongly. Times just have changed.

Like it or not Babcock and Lou had a huge hand in the turning of this franchise. Y’all can whine about things years later but the truth is they helped many players in the organization. They aided in the growth and development of what is the core today and other nhlers around the league.
