Once Erik Karlsson Gets Traded, Who Will Run The Sharks Power Play?

If and when Erik Karlsson gets traded, who will run the power play for the San Jose Sharks? Look at some potential in-house options to replace the massive minutes logged by Karlsson, including Matt Benning and Mario Ferraro, and why they could be options, but there are unknown players with more potential. Next, if Henry Thrun can recreate the dominant Harvard power play in the NHL and if Leon Gawanke is the dark horse to win the job after leading the Manitoba Moose’s unit. Also, examine if Matt Dumba is a worthy candidate and if Caleb Jones would be worth a flyer and finish with the chaos theory of just playing a five-forward unit consisting of Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, William Eklund, Anthony Duclair, and Filip Zadina.

  1. If they lose Karlsson, they’d be better off rolling with 5 forwards next season on the PP.

  2. Grier’s probably not done shaking things up this off season. We have so many D’s and the third line center role is still a question mark. I’m hoping Bords or Bystedt get a shot there. I’d be annoyed if Carpenter was our 4c and Sturm stays at 3c.

  3. Top Shelf Hockey (YouTube) reported a rumour that Kevin Labanc was being traded to Vancouver Canucks for Tyler Myers (not sure if other parts in the deal), and that it had not been finalized. Any idea if trading Karlsson is a condition for completing the Labanc/Myers trade to stabilize Sharks defence for future? How could trading one struggling player for another struggling player improve any team if the players continue to struggle any ways?

I have major doubts about Mike Grier's method of second chances for everyone hockey team identity building. A majority of second chance players don't work out and they continue dropping out of competition, so if you stack a whole NHL team with second chance struggling players, it is only reasonable to expect a few winners and a majority of consistently struggling players who cannot get their game together. Sharks are trying to overhaul their whole team development philosophy, but taking on so many cast offs and desperate players (including Zadina) could impact on the results. The most probable outcome of Mike Grier's approach is another very high draft pick in 2024 due to team falling to bottom of NHL standings. You never know who really deserves a second chance and who needs to be shuffled out of the NHL due to any number of factors (including chronic injuries) making that player not competitive. I am wondering if some of these struggling players are really third chance or fourth chance or more also. Opportunity knocks but it also slams the door in the face of those who prove time and again they cannot keep up or serve a team role sufficiently.

  4. Definitely our most creative offensive player Barabanov, Hertl, Couture, Eklund, and probably Duclair… Or loop Shakir at some point to give him some experience… if Eric is not with us, we need to have 5 attackers as our blue line guys offensively are not productive.

  5. Another real possibility is whoever comes back in a Karlsson trade, like a Petry or Pecse
