  1. My top 5 picks:
    1. Adam Fox
    2. Rasmus Dahlin
    3. Dougie Hamilton
    4. Erik Karlsson (sorry fans, Hamilton is better all-rounded; Karlsson was never a great defensive defenceman to begin with)
    5. Josh Morrissey
HM: Charlie McAvoy (would have made it if he remained healthy)
Cale Makar (would have made it if the Avalanche as a whole remained healthy)

  2. Dahlin. His team is actually in the playoff picture. Remember when barrie had the most points for defense a couple seasons ago and he didn't get one vote for Norris. Sure 100 points on defense is cool, but if your spoon fed points just to get 100 in the final stretch its kinda weird. It's a team sport, playoff picture matters.

  3. Dahlin is the only reason buffalo is above 500. He is carrying them with defense and offence.

  4. I also think defense should matter more or have its own award for most defensive.
BUT if it had been an American player they wouldn't care about it and Erik would have been in 1 2 and 3 place on the list. I hope he gets to 100p.

  5. sadly it probably goes to Karlsson even though Josh Morrissey deserves it so much more.

  6. How can you fail to pick EK65 as your #1 contender – some hate for swedes here or what? Hung up on defensive qualities – he obviously has those too

    Incredible.

  7. if he hits 100 points, or even 95, he has to win it I don't care if he doesn't back check, lol. that's insane for a defensemen AND ON SHARKS. my other pick would be dahlin

  8. Dahlin over karlsson? Nah I'm not buying that. Btw they seem pretty biased

  9. The Norris should go to the most offensively productive defenseman who also plays good defense. I'd prefer that they create another award for offensive defenseman and make the Norris for defensive defenseman. Defensive defenseman get ignored and that's not right.

  10. Not even a mention of Makar by anyone?

Naming an award for "offensive defenseman" for Orr, while "best overall defenseman" named after anyone else is a huge insult to Orr, and completely misrepresents the player was. He dominated at both ends of the ice. If I was Orr, I would refuse that "honour". If you must have a separate award for offensive defenseman, a better name is "Coffey".

  11. Oh baby this video aged like fine wine! 🍷 Dahlin and Morrisey are out of the race and EK65 is 5points away from 100 with 6 games left!

  12. They need to have an offensive and a defensive defenseman trophy. I am a shark's fan so I'm biased but if Erik Karlsson doesn't win that would just be a huge disrespect to him.

  13. "It's not just about offense" do they realise McDavid once won a Hart trophy with a total of 7 minutes of short-handed TOI? If a defenseman is scoring 100+ points, they simply don't need to defend

also, it's not like Karlsson is a liability defensively. he's not great, but he isn't as bad as people say

  14. A lot of people suggest that Karlsson's overrated and usually stress his limited defensive skills and +/- stats.
We can look at this many ways:
Those of us that may report on his offensive prowess and playmaking skills may be prone to overestimate, not taking into account his overall game.
Those that keep emphasis on his lacking defense and claim he's a liability, tend to forget that his offensive game makes his team competitive, where there would otherwise be very poor depth.

I would suggest that he still isn't regarded as a top 4 defenseman in the NHL. Looking at the latest Fantasy rankings ahead of 23/24 season, he's not ranked among the top 6 (Makar, Josi, Dahlin, Hamilton, Fox and McAvoy), and only 44th overall.
It will be interesting to see what kind of a team he will be playing on the coming season, whether he's with Sharks or elsewhere.

  15. In the five-six recent years, it could be argued that Hedman has by far the most consistent D-man qualities in the league, especially if we're favoring defense. He's also putting up the offensive numbers. Yet, he has only one Norris.
NHL has always promoted players that produce offensively.
It would be a surprising if they change their mindset this year

  16. I'd say Karlsson for sure. Hes over 30 and has put up the first 100 point season for a defenseman in a long while, whilst being on a lottery bound Sharks team. To be able to score over 100 points, have an alright +/- for a lowly Sharks team, to still play strong despite being eliminated first in the league, all over the age of 30 makes him my pick without much further consideration

  17. Karlsson has no business winning the Norris. Net negative player despite 101 point season. Minus 26 (which is 8th worse in the NHL) despite averaging 22 seconds a game killing penalties. So at even strength he was a minus 26! And don't make excuses for playing on a bad team! He certainly didn't help. Hughes plus 15 on a horrible defensive team while averaging 1 minute and nineteen seconds of penalty killing ( worse penalty kill in the league ) imagine Vancouver without him. Same story with Dahlin. Plus 12 and averaged 1 minute and 17 seconds on the penalty kill. Also a bad team with garbage goaltending. The Norris trophy is being awarded to players on teams in the U.S. with the best media coverage in an effort to market the game.
