I also don’t understand the obsession of talking about minor trades that will get late picks. Scouting has improved and in turn the likihood of a late round pick becoming a NHLer has drastically decreased and the probability of a late round steal where he becomes a star is basically non exisistent anymore. If you don’t believe me just look at recent draft results and players games played.
So when we deal a player a get a 3rd rounder instead of a 4th and everyone here collectively looses their shit, were talking about maybe an increase of from 10 to 15% chance that pick will be a 3rd-4th line role player.

If he didn’t want to waive his NTC to go to SJ because they were rebuilding (or too far from home) and he didn’t want to waste his last few years in the NHL on a bottom team, I think he’ll be very accomodating to be traded by Hughes because Montreal is also not going to contend soon.
MTL retains 50% and he’s suddenly a 2.3M top 4 RD for just 2 years, and that’s hard to find. You can receive a cheap player for free just to so Petry can fit under the receiving team’s cap, plus a prospect or pick.
If you can’t find that deal, you can still package Petry’s 2.3 with someone like Armia at 3.4 and take on someone on his last contract year, like Mantha at 5.7 (with maybe a kicker on top), and try to turn Mantha around before trading him at the TDL for a better return. At the very least, you’d get rid of the last contract year of Armia without taking up an additional forward slot. Caps also get to reunite Eddy-Petry.
