* Flames are getting boxed into a situation where they will have several players on expiring contracts, putting them at risk of having to retain them during a playoff run or worse sustain an injury.
* At the same time Conroy doesn’t want to be lowballed – he wants a deal that’s good for the Flames.
* A Hanafin trade would be a different beast from the Karlsson trade: he’s younger and about to go into his prime.
* Likewise, a trade would be structured differently from that of the Karlsson deal. No cap dumps or salary retention. * Assets the Flames want in return would be younger players a la Sharangovich * The problem is a lot of teams are cap strapped right now, and McKenzie ponders about their willingness to give up assets for him, both of which makes a trade much more difficult as of now. * Lists Detroit as a potential given their cap flexibility.

At this point, the situation is largely out of their hands. The draft was going to be the best time to make moves, now the Flames are going to have to be reactive.
It is the same old same old, and I understand that Connie wasn’t in the particularly the best spot. However, at the end of the day results matter, and this management group hasn’t done good enough this off-season in setting a clear direction for the team.
