The problem is the culture in Toronto. They are treated like celebrities and because of it the fans would have a riot if they were traded.
Because of that they have every bit of leverage in contract negotiation with an inflated ego to go with it.
Torontos staff had nothing they can do to reduce the price especially since as of right now, Toronto is also not a place to win a cup considering previous years.
