When you put it that way, it makes sense.
He's not worth 11m.
Tavares is still a fine player, but he is definitely overpaid by a couple million. As for him being untradeable, Tavares has already said that he is where he wants to be, and that he has no intention of waiving his NMC.
I think that most people are missing the point here which is how much fun it is to watch the Laffs lose and listen to their fans whine.
good 2nd liner…
The problem with Tavares is he has the 7th largest cap hit in the league and he is not even close to being the 7th best player. In one way it is a little unfair because Covid made this even worse, as at the time of signing the idea was the cap would keep going up and then the contract would not have been as bad. The second real problem was they had Kadri at the time, and did not need to upgrade for a 2nd centre. They needed a defensemen to play top minutes with Reilly, something they have never addressed still. It made them too top heavy and vulnerable when the game gets tighter namely the playoffs. Bad roster construction versus Tavares not being worth the money.
They haven't learned anything
Marner and Nylander were the only core 4 to really do anything vs Florida.
But I mean, everyone underestimated Florida (except Vegas) and the Core 4 dominated Tampa.
So, it's really just some teams, some years.
Technically, the Core 4 exist due to the fact not every player is going to have his best game every game, so the match suggests that if one guy is off, someone else can step up.
The money is an issue, and other guys not getting the same attention will lead to more players leaving where they can make more money.
The average NHL career is, what, 8-10 years at most?
The average cost of living (including the constant travel expenses they incur) is usually 80k + travel, which would be 40+ road games @ 1000$ each for flights and meals. So 120k. If you're in sales, which NHL teams SELL merch and tickets, then your primary sales people (the players) make a commission, which is relative to what they draw from a monetary standpoint.
So 20k ticket at 150$ each (minimum), would be 3 million, per game. . Plus another 5000 on merch sales for 4 million per season.
So 245 million per season divided amongst the players and staff, but the player is contracted, meaning they have to play for that team with no exceptions, giving them double that salary due to injury risk, and exclusivity. Basically, if you work 40 hours a week, there isn't anything to say you can't work another 10-30 hours at other jobs for additional income, which NHL players can't do.
Alright, so our base is now up to 240k per season.
And this team of 12 active forwards (4 lines of 3), 2 goalies, and 6 top defensemen, the only GUARANTEED players on the roster, are 20 people, sharing in 245 million (probably closer to 150 million, due to things like business expenditures and licensing fees).
If we're being honest, those are the only people who should have a share, given that, without the players, there is no team.
So let's further reduce it to 120 million, because owners are assholes who will run players into the ground to make an extra nickel on their dollars.
120 million, divided by 20.. 6 million dollars. EACH.
Now, let's do the honest take, and say it like it is: the pressure on Matthews or Marner was FAR higher than it was on Holl. So, they get a bigger share but also have more pressure.
The Sabres haven't made the playoffs in how long, and their players don't get threatened by their fans, so this isn't just conjecture either.
Now, while the Leafs haven't had a whole ton of playoff success, I will add that, in their contracts, NHL players are paid bonuses for the playoffs.
As in, what we see is a BASE contract.
7 million over 82 games, and that works out to a very specific number.
That number? The players get paid that same amount PER PLAYOFF GAME, meaning they could earn closer to 10 million in a season.
And, if they win the Cup, they could make closer to 11 million that season.
So it's not like Nylander and Tavares and Matthews don't earn the contracts they sign whe they make the playoffs and lose.
They just cost Toronto less money š
The biggest difference?
That extra cash flow isn't counted towards the salary cap š¤·
Matthews is the problem. He has been and will continue to be! Most Leaf fans don't know how much better the team will be with his contract money spent elsewhere. Kick rocks Matthews!!
Who scored the gwg to get round 2 anyone got a guess. OH YA JT!
Leaf fans should be making their Captain mayor of Toronto. He helped them win the Lightning Cup!
Itās hilarious as a hockey fan thereās so much leafās media I legitimately thought JT was bad. Till I looked up his stats. There arenāt many 2cās better out there and thereās probably a large handful of teams that would love to have him as there 1c
The problem is not that he isnāt an āeffectiveā 2C. The problem is that the way this team is constructed they should have kept Kadri and used the salary differential to sign a top four defenseman. They would have been much stronger and harder to beat that way.
Nothing wrong with JT. Heās the perfect guy to be the Captain in Toronto. I will say this, the Leafs are going to have to Trade somebody from the core 4 though, and get a great prospect in return and a great Twoway-Defence-man or a Defensive-Defence-man.
Iād say get rid of a prospect like Robertson or Knies along with Brodie for a great D man. The problem isnāt so much the scoring, itās we need a solid blue line. Signing Klingberg in my eyes just made things feel more worse on the D end.
Marner is likely the best of the 4, long term, but Tavares is a super strong member of the team. Leaf fans are too reactive to micro-trends
A few bad games? How about a few bad playoffs. 12 mill each for 3 players that can't win. Its funny no other team would pay 12 mill for the guy, the leafs will thou, the leafs will.
Players must hate playing in Toronto
11 mil for a point per game player is not a good contract. JT isnāt sinking the leafs, but your overpaying all 3 of your top players and thatās a problem. The Dubas effect.
He is a great 2nd line centre, problem is paying 11 million for a second line centre kinda throw the whole pay structure of the team out of balance, which is also why he is untradeable
Cups are all that matter. That core 4 will never win one together. There isnt enough heart in the 4 of them to fill Matt Tkchuk's jock.
people talking shit on JTs contract just don't watch the games lol
He is still a good player, but that was an unnecessary signing by Dubas. He was not a player they needed. That $11 million could have been better spent somewhere else. He has a full no movement clause. He can't be traded just like that. To ignore all of that is just stupid. What a bad take dude.
Ok so why is he a minus player, does that make you an elite NHL center? Matthews was +30. He can not play defensively at center anymore period. 100% we would have been better off with Kadri and 4 m to add a real elite defense partner for Rielly that would have won a cup. so while I don't hate Tavares he is too slow to play good defense at center now so therefore making him a winger worth no more then 8.5M .
Blows my mind too. JT is coming off a phenomenal season.
Tavares is still effective, heās just not an 11 mil player anymore. If you resigned him at around 7 or 8 for a couple years itād be much more palatable
There is nothing wrong with Tavares but his contract hand cuffed the Leafs when they already had a great 2nd center in Kadri. As usual TO makes yet another horrible decision that just snowballs into losing every good draft we had , every 1st pick we had , all just trying to add pieces for support with no $ left because 5 players make almost 50 mil of your 80 m cap lol. He does not suck , it was a bad idea that let's face it did NOT work.
Most underrated or overhated contract
Leafs fans need to calm down! Even if two generation did not see Leafs win a Stanley cup doesn't mean they are bad! They are still a good season team!
Thereās so much skill on the leafs that they donāt have any room for grit which is essential during the playoffs, thatās why they do so well during the regular season and so bad during the post season
It has a no movement clause and said he won't wave it so kinda untradeable
The reason heās untradable Isnāt because he doesnāt have value, itās because of his full no move
It has not been a "slam dunk" success as you state in the video. That's an absurd take. The year is 2023, your success as a team is judged on how far you can get in the playoffs and Johnny T has not been him in the playoffs. For a player making 11 million dollars a year, there aren't too many comparisons to be made as he is the 7th highest player in the league. Are you telling me that you think Johnny is a top 7 player in the league? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I'm not saying that he's a shitter either, but realistically there is no way that Tavares is a top 10 player in the NHL but that's what he's paid to produce as. This contract looks a lot worse than it is because of the team dynamic we have going on, but honestly on any team it would not be a great value contract. It wouldn't be as bad if we were a team that was more spread out and not TOP heavy but we ARE top heavy… We already pay 3 guys almost 30 million to put up numbers and be dominant on the PP. Imagine if we had the 10 mill we pay John to spread throughout the roster on legitimate depth that can play in other scenarios for us, it would be scary.
People always seem to forget that the only reason his AAV is that high is the fact he was a belle of the ball free agent. Is his production value of his contract indicative of his performance compared to other players? No, but it never was supposed to be. You want this high skilled player who can go anywhere to be a franchise center for your playoff ready team? Gotta throw big money at him, and this is a direct consequence of that. Which happens to so many other teams, but is only focused on JT because he's a Leaf and the value is higher that most others but that will change. Especially in the coming years.
Only difference I'd have made is that 11 million at this point seems steep . It'd be better if it had been front heavy so he'd only be roughly a 8 or 9 million dollar cap hit on the back end of the contract which is where we're at now . Giving the extra couple million so sign one more guy and still have a million dollars as an emergency fund for negotiating contract extensions that numbers are the key issue on ( Nylander ) . If the Leafs had that extra million to offer he'd be way easier to negotiate with .
JT isnt the problem , Leafs need steady goal tending .
Tavares contract is terrible, and the high AAV enabled the huge asks by Marner and Matthews. Tavares set the bar and didnāt take any discount for his āfavā team, so why should they?
Jt is fine he outplays and outworks multiple 2nd line players around the league,, As for the contract i liked it at first but starting not too it was the gateway for Marner, Matthews and willy demanding more money. They all know theyāre better than current Jt so in their eyes they deserve more than him and wonāt take less. Ntm heās coming off a great season he looked faster and stronger last yr than he did his younger years you can see how hard he works on his skating knowing heās getting older
Enjoy Matthews at 14M, Laffs
numbers r good , but i dont like the -7
