Jordan Staal scoring in a penalty shot against Columbus 10-21-06. Despite the ref washout, it was ruled a goal upon review because it went in on rebound from the goalie’s back.

  1. Watch closely at the end. It goes off the goalie's back and goes in, which is a valid goal. As long as the shooter only makes one shot, anything that happens after that counts.

  2. That is not the rule. As was eventually decided on review, it was a goal. As long as the player doesn't touch it after making the initial shot, any momentum/change in direction of the puck is valid.

  3. Actually you're right. He had *2* SHG that game. This one, and another.

14:43 SHG – Jordan Staal, Wrist Shot – Assists: Mark Recchi and Rob Scuderi

07:49 SHG – Jordan Staal, Wrist Shot – Assists: none

  4. Did the puck go in the net? Yes.

Did he touch the puck after taking the initial shot? No.

Those are the 2 requirements for a good goal. So yes, it is a goal.
