Hughes made a promise to Petry that he will get him to an American team before the school year starts for his kids. Very classy GM. I think free agent players of the future will give Montreal bonus points for stuff like this.
Iโm also glad itโs over before training camp. No needless extra stories to distract the real problem. Itโs a good problem, but now the young guns will have some good internal competition tp push them. Also we now have a plethora of defensive prospects that can be leveraged in different assets depending on future needs.
More moves to come!!!
i think many people over estimated the trade value of petry. maybe at the dead line IF he palyed well and IF he wanted to be here, but neither is likely. i loved petry but he's on thedown side of his career. over all it's another great trade. so half hoffman's salary comes off the books and they get a couple of picks and a couple of b or c prospects. maybe the forth is enough to get armia to chicago or arizona next, (if necessary a third r second)then trade desmith and they are in an excellent cap position.
doing a solid for the player also shows class and makes montreal more attractive to free agents later

Hughes is so much better than his predecessor, who always want to win the trade. It is absolutely possible to craft a trade so that everyone wins. Kudos!

A 1st trade loss for Hughes? Was a fair trade if they didnt retain 2 years of the Petry contract. At hindsight i think Habs and wings could have been neck in neck in the standings. This trade should put Detroit comfortably ahead of Habs. Hughes aiming for another top 5 pick in the 2024 draft.

I'm a fan of Hugues but… this is not a good trade. We're having a suspect D, a 4th round pick, Petry retained at 50% for 2 years… Can you imagine Yzerman saying on top of it yea it's going to be the later of the the 4th rounders I have ? ๐ Come on… Yeah good for Petry but very disappointed on this return, and let's not just focus on the human part if the return is trash. He's there to build a team.
