Early in the preseason the team hasn’t made cuts yet so they still have a ton of players on the roster, so they split it into 2 teams and send one team away and have one team play at home. As the preseason goes on they cut the roster down to what will eventually be the opening night regular season roster, but early preseason games are mostly just a handful of NHL guys playing with prospects/AHLers/professional try outs
