[Veillette] would like to repeat that we are currently very mad that a prime aged player, who regularly misses about a dozen games a year, didn’t give up his Age 32 to 35 seasons in a contract extension… [cont.]

…A lot of the people mad that Toronto didn’t get Auston Matthews’ age 32-35 years are also the same people mad that John Tavares is now only “worth” about 75-80% of his AAV at the back end of his deal. Tavares is 32.

55 games in 7 seasons including 0 playoff games is 7.9 per season not 12.

Just so you know the god himself McD has missed 50 in 8 seasons.

My guess is that those mad people are either uneducated or just plain causals. Anyone with a good head on their shoulders knows this is a good deal

  3. I don’t think any leaf fan is “mad” at this extension. It would of been nice for a 5-7 year deal but at the same time if he plays great the next 4 there’s no reason leaf’s won’t re-up it another 4.

  4. Jeff isn’t the guy you want to agree with…

I don’t care, all that matters is we now have a very very good player with us for ~~4~~ 5 more years while the cap also goes up for us.

Let’s worry about future cap concerns when they happen. Willy will happen when it happens and if it doesn’t our backup is Bert.

    edit: 5 more years

I like the deal, but pretending 8×14 wouldn’t have been better is silly.

3 things can be true at once. 1, this was best case scenario, 2, 8 would have been preferable. 3, he stay.

He missed 4 games in 2021, 9 in 2022, 8 in 2023, the injury narrative is way overblown.

I’m not mad. 4 years is perfect. If they can’t make the finals in 4 more seasons with Matthews, they will blow it all up anyways.

None of us know where Auston or our team will be in 5 years. I am fine with it.

High end star players don’t turn into pumpkins ages 32-35. See Crosby, Malkin, Bergeron, Datsyuk, Zetterberg.

I wish he did what Mackinnon did and signed a long term deal that benefits the team. Most other stars do that, the fact he didn’t makes it harder to win a cup. Sure it’s better to have him then not but I don’t like how the core (mainly Matthews and Marner) take as much as they can while the team consistently falls short in the playoffs. As a fan it makes them less likeable.

They care more about money than the cup, it can’t be good in the room or for negotiating with other good players

This fan base is simultaneously furious at our management for signing Tavares to a big 7 year contract at age 27, and furious at our management for not signing Matthews to a big 8 year contract at age 26.

It’s a valid take, but stop posting this fucking guy. A broken clock etc.

Tavares deal was negative value in year 2. I will die on this hill. The contract has been terrible for a long time.

The team needs to follow the VGK model. Ignore the toxic media, ignore the toxic useless braindead fans that know nothing about hockey, stick to the plan and screw loyalty.

My question is why would matthews not want to lock in. Isn’t there risk for him running into very possible injury issues the next few years. Who’s going to give him a mega contract at 31
