Veleno has NOT progressed. The Red Wings aren't a charity. I like him, he's still young. This is his Last Chance Motel. Joey, score 20 goals and you can cash in.
Burgers was our best and most developed prospect seasons ago but as fresher draft picks rolled into the system people kinda lost track of that , he's where he should be and he's still underated. What does the kid have to do? # kane/Datsyuk 0.67. Kudos Brian for thinking 2nd line… not just this season, into the great years

Valeno’s defensive qualities were evident last year and they shouldn’t be underestimated. You might not have drafted him for that but it’s still a strength and shouldn’t be hastily discarded.
If Veleno hit the gym, bulked up, got a Bertuzzi like edge, get good at draws, and become a shot blocking and pk specialist, he has a shot of staying in the league. Like a Luke Glendening type.
Being he was a first round pick and his contract situation this summer, I don’t see him doing those things to stay in the league, especially since he was an offensive player in the QMJHL.
He has good speed, and there’s value in being a Center . But he has had plenty of opportunities the last few years and didn’t stand out in any meaningful way.

This roster is too deep and veleno might not get much chance to play. This contract feels like a “moveable for a change of scenery” contract. Veleno needs playing time. If he can’t get it here, it’s in his best interest to go to a team that will play him.
Yzerman has transformed this roster from a “we NEED our young guys to step up” roster into a “we want our young guys to step up.” Veleno is in a super awkward spot for this transition and looks squeezed out at the moment.
Veleno? Waste of money
The Detroit Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins will be very exciting teams to watch this season.
I see the Veleno deal is as a "prove your worth" deal. Show us you want it. Joe had these chances to grab a bigger role, but just hasn't. He's a servicable fourth liner right now, but didn't grab it and hold on tight. Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him start in GR.
I want to see him do well, and I want him to work in Detroit… but if he can't justify his spot on the team, he'll end up elsewhere. As you guys said, we have kids knocking down the door.
You've just convinced me that Gostisbehere on the third pair and 1st PP unit is the way to go. If literally all we're gonna talk about is his offense…
I think the offense could show up a bit more this year because he is going to have much better line mates if he can hold down the 4c spot.
rasmussen is going to be on the 2nd line most likely so unless they move him to the top line on the wing, put burgers on the 2nd with raymond and then have perron on the third i dont see burgers being in the top 6 this season unless someone gets hurt or a trade happens. as for veleno he was likely signed that cheaply so he'd be easy to move in a trade which im guessing is the real reason behind the cheap deal
