Guy has a bright career ahead of him. Future finish force on that blue line

I’ve been banging this drum for a while, but Topi Niemelä’s winning of the WJC defenceman of the tournament award bodes well for him. Since the lockout, everybody before Topi who’s won it has gone on to play at least 50 NHL games, and only one (Brandon Gormley) played less than 100. This is an award that has produced Norris winners, captains, Cup champions. Obviously nothing’s guaranteed, and a couple of weeks of games can’t carry a guy to the Hall, but it’s a sign that he’s on the right track to be an impact player.

Criminally underrated
Topi and Knies are our best prospects by far and Topi is in the same tier

The talk of top-pair Marlies defencemen in the write up that ranked him #10 was interesting. I don’t remember Percy being a top pair defender with the Marlies…

Topi is your typical new age dman. A little undersized but has the smarts, mobility and creativity to move the puck forward and defend well. If Reilly loses his PP1 spot in the next 3 years (assuming Klingberg doesn’t stay longer then one year) it will be to topi
