  1. I know this is going to trigger people, and Ovechkin would not think of doing this. However, just throwing it out: what if he starts thinking "I want another cup, and Washington isn't doing enough to give me that chance anymore"? And worse he goes to break the Gretzky record with the new team?
Again, this is 0.00001% chance this is even brought up as hypothetical.

  2. Your takes are pretty accurate I'd say- there's so much focus around Ovi breaking the record that it's almost a safety net for them, they can fall back on "but Ovi is that much closer to breaking the record!" when they come up short at the end of the year, which I think they will once again. But who knows- Florida barely squeaked in and went all the way to the final when nobody even considered them in April. As a Pens fan, I too would love to see us face-off against the Caps in the post, but both teams are borderline rn so it may be a stretch.

  3. The Caps were one of the best teams of the last decade. They won the cup, two presidents trophies (three if you count 09-10), and a bunch of division titles. Now their core has gotten old so of course they're having trouble competing in a brutal conference and division. The pens haven't done shit since we won either, in fact they've been unquestionably managed worse considering their core is younger (that's why Hextall got fired and BMac still has his job). Looking forward to your video on how pathetic Pittsburgh has been since their cups.

  4. I work in the Caps front office, the feeling is that we’ve been lost in recent years but are turning the ship around to be competitive these last years of Ovis Career. Injuries are no excuse but we got hit pretty consistently and heavily for several straight years

  5. It's always about perspective and narrative build by people and media. . Never accomplishment. You're saying this about Ovie, but what about Jarome Iginla ? He's regarded widely as one of the better leader in the game starting in the 2000's. He starts his career with 0 zero playoffs appearance in his first 6 seasons. Then comes his cup appearances in 2004. Then what ? 8 years of the Flames. First four being toss out the first round. Then 4 of no playoffs. So then why there is this "oh shit why you couldn't win with Ovie hypothesis if you didn't win with him'' but not for Iginla ? It's always the same story with players rubbing the people the wrong way and the fans and the medias creating narrative out of nowhere. Another one that comes to mind is Joe Thornton. Or Steve Yzerman who the first ten years of his career was said not to be a leader and a player who you can't win with. 10 years later, he's seen as one of the greatest.

  6. The pens as well have been absolute ass since 2018 would love to hear your opinion on them too

  7. They will likely just stay mediocre and stack up prospects until Ovie retires, then go for a full re-build

  8. Sad truth is that Ovi himself is getting older and a bit less competitive. He still hits and shoots the puck well, but his agility has decreased and it feels the rest of the team is just trying to dish it to him unnaturally to hurry up and end his goal chase faster, where for Backstrom (when he was healthy) it was more natural.

  9. The Metro is just super competitive. The teams that Ovi and Sid were dominating throughout their whole careers have just become better. Gretzky and Lemieux were on teams that didn't make the playoffs either. This isn't a big deal, just shows new talent has entered the league.

  10. The Caps have always been terribly run. The fact that Ovie won ANYTHING with that organization is way more of a miracle than Crosby’s three in Pittsburgh.

  11. it was obvious they were done when they resigned backstrom for hilarious amounts of money.

  12. if it helps, Gretzky's last cup was 87-88, and nothing else for him except chasing Gordie Howe for the final what 10 years of his career, I am also so glad living in Ontario I won't be seeing him and mcwhiner on sports betting commercials anymore

  13. The all time scoring record is more important, interesting and definitely worth more money than another stanley cup for washington. That said it shouldn't stop them from drafting well to build the next winning team. I thinking trying to build a winning team doesn't have to take a back seat to ovi winning the title in fact I think it could only help. Ovi could take a strategic pay cut to help out with the build and increase his chances of breaking the record. JMHO though.

  14. Yes they have diminished from their elite years. Last year was a brutal year for injuries. Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson, Dowd, Hagelin for a large chunk of the season. Caps still found themselves in a playoff spot when John Carlson went down. Then Ovie’s father passes and he fights injuries so it was a tough go.

For a team that never drafted very high, the Hershey Bears won the AHL title and have Miroschnichenko, and the two great prospects from this draft. So they are doing ok.

New coaching staff will help Kuznetzov or maybe trade him to Winnipeg for Schieffle.

Yes the Ovie goal scoring record is a hindrance but they’re going to have to deal with it.

  15. As a Capitals fan I really don’t care. We’ve already won our cup; now all of our focus should be on the record.

  16. As a caps fan here a lot of the blame from me goes on Laviolette. Even with Reirden in the two years after we won the cup this was still an exciting team to watch that played with an identity. Once Lavi was hired their identity became they are old and slow. Totally the wrong hire, should have gotten Gallant instead. Really tho they just shouldn't have let Trotz go.

  17. Christ lol I was getting a blowie when I heard Rasmus name and I thot we lost a d-man had to rewatch , thank fck lmbo

  18. Caps fan and I can't see contendership coning anytime soon. Phillips could be a sneaky good pickup but probably only on a Sheary/Aube-Kubel/Milano level. I just hope some of the Calder Cup winners can make a step up and Miroshnicehenko can hit the ground running on his entry to the NA game.

  19. I think you might be way over-reacting, hes the third best player of his generation, him winning one at all is sort of what he should achieve, let him break the goal record and hell have live up to that position.

  20. So imagine the fan's disappointment if the team keeps focusing on Gretzky's record and Ovi DOESN'T get it… Ovi can still score, but he his getting older and sometimes the decline happens quickly. Look at Bergeron, he won the Selke trophy this summer, then realized he couln't continue anymore.

  21. Watching Ovie last time they were in the playoffs was hard. He's satisfied with 1 cup. Big fella didn't move his feet at all. Almost looked like he was just watching the game and had the best seats in the house.

  22. Sorry, but beating up an aging organization over a player chasing a milestone is small minded. Being a Boys fan we all knew why Emmitt was still there, but it still means something. Not Ovi's fault that the Pens and Hawks were more loaded teams.

  23. As a caps fan it’s been hard to watch the slow hard crash into mediocrity. I think the thing that’s going to hurt for years is the fact they promised Ovi they wouldn’t go into a full blown rebuild at the end of his career. They are going to try to skate by with moves like getting max pat to look like they are “working on it” but they won’t be contenders for the rest of ovis career as much as I hate to say it.

  24. As a lifelong caps fan and Alexandria born guy, I don't think it is the end of the world since the metro is such a tight division now compared to pre covid and everything is now on the table literally. Plus while you want to win as many cups as you can, having 1 cup to your resume is better than no cup at all. I just hope the caps get back in playoffs idc where they finish as long as it is the top 8 in the east. from the examples to 2019 to now, I think 2019 and 2020 are understandable since the caps in 2019 had like 99% of that same roster from the year prior in their championship still there and probably should've made it to at least round 2 or round 3 and how ofc you want to see your team go all the way and win every year but if they don't then losing in round 2 or 3 wouldn't have been as distressing as losing round 1 esp as the defending champs who are the 2nd seed in the east exactly like the year prior although I will admit round 1 was a fun series going into 7 games in double OT, hell I was at game 5 which they won to get a 3-2 lead in the series so we could've ended it in game 6 realistically but unfortunately we didn't and ofc being back home for game 7 should've been an advantage but sadly it didn't work out although I will give the canes lotta credit I have a lot of respect for their team and their fans. 2020 they had like 90% of their 2018 cup team still there and they played against the Islanders in round 1, a team that wasn't even supposed to be in the playoffs and only did due to the expanded format so they should've went to at least the second round or the third round at the most. Losing in the second round or third round ofc isn't as painful as losing round 1 esp if you were the much better team. 2021 and 2022 sadly the caps didn't stand much of a chance against Boston (and the Perfection line in arguably the dopest line this century hell if the caps had went to round 3 instead of carolina in 2019 I admit Boston prolly would've came out as the winner since they did sweep the canes although if it were the caps it wouldn't be a sweep it'd prolly be in 6-7 games cause of the perfection line brilliance which is ok but well never know cause it never occurred it was carolina and they breezed by them) and ofc the panthers being the presidents trophy winners and not having Wilson for the rest of the series after game 1. Sorry for the long message just my thoughts personally on some of these mishaps. With this the faces of this generation of Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos and Kane, people will remember it for decades to come no matter what happens after those 4 step away from the game.

  25. If John Carlson stays healthy and Strome has a career best season, they making the playoffs.

  26. I agree as a caps fan except one thing. Martin Fehervary is an extremely underrated player. He’s a physical defensive defencemen who has amazing offensive potential (just look at some highlights) but plays safe. He is amazing in his own zone and has gotten better each year. Not to mention him and Sandin are the same age, meaning if Sandin can learn how to play his off side, that would be a really good pairing in the future

  27. I don't see them making the playoffs: they've barely done anything during the off-season, the main player they acquired is just as injury prone as half the roster, they're old, and their contracts are nearly impossible to trade away because they're overvalued.

  28. I feel like Oshie is going to have one last push pull out a 40 point season at the end of his career

  29. you think getting patch — an old man who likely won't play until december at best == is a good idea? while spewing all of this other bullshit? what a joke

  30. You can thank BM for making our Worst signing ever in acquiring Peter Laviolette, which wasted 3 good years from our core guys. We had a chance to hire Gerrard Gallant, who actually could have gotten the respect from the players that they never had, or gave to Coach resting Bit%h Face -aka Lavvy-Oh-Toilette.

  31. a friend of terrorist should go back home to his soon to be north Korea style of russia

  32. Todd Rierden was a horrible signing the moment it happened. That set the franchise back as the core aged another two years before bringing in Laviolette.
