Biggest One Hit Wonder? Cheechoo, Brown, or…

Did anyone else have a bigger outlier season that indicated they were a top star then Jonathan Cheechoo in 2005–06 when he racked up a 56–37–93 stat line? 56 goals just because Joe Thornton joined your team is a massive jump. This guy had 170 career NHL goals, and 33% of them were scored in a single season. He only played 7 seasons in the NHL! Similar comps are probably all talented guys who could only excel when a more superior athlete was the star – guys with a good shot who couldn’t do much else very well. As a Pens fan Rob Brown comes to mind. Brown tallied 49–66–115 in 1988–89 on Mario’s wing, but Mario did an astronomical 85–114–199 that year and cruised to a slew of individual accolades, leading the Art Ross chase by 31 points over runner up Gretzky and 84 over his own winger Brown. Only two other times in his career Brown scored 20+ goals in the NHL, and both of those seasons peaked in the 20s while also spending time with Le Magnefique. Brown was in the lig for 13 years (with a good bit of AHL/IHL in the second half) and racked up 190 goals, only 20 more than Cheechoo’s career 170. Who else you got?

I still have to say Jim Carey, the Net Detective (or the Net Defective after the Vezina)

Pisani gets at least an honorable mention for this, methinks.

Idk about cheechoo chief I’m doing a throw back roster franchise on NHL 23 and he did score 48 in the 2005-06 season. Clearly he’s got the scoring touch it’s not Thornton feeding him free goals

Bernie Nicholls’s 70G+80A was a pretty big outlier. He hit 100 pts (exactly) once, and was close a few other times, but after that season, he never got more than 27G or 75P.

Not quite a one-hit wonder, but definitely an outlier season. Amazing what playing with the greatest player of all-time will do. The injury bug hit, too, but that’s always been a year that stood out to me.

Lonny Bohonos.. 3 goals, 6 assists in 9 playoff games playing with Sundin in 1998? ..as the Leafs reached the Conference Finals… Never saw him again..

Gary Leeman had two 30 goal seasons then a 50 and then fell off a cliff.

Jimmy Carson was the non cash big piece of the Gretzky trade. Not exactly a one hit wonder but man he sunk like a rock.

The Dynamo Minsk fans LOVE Jonathan Cheechoo. I couldn’t believe how many cheechoo jerseys I saw when I went to a couple games in Belarus a few years ago.

Definitely not the biggest, but Andrew Raycroft has gotta be on this list.

Andrew Hammond aka the Hamburgler on the 14-15 Sens. Guy was unreal for part of a season. Then mediocre.
