  1. I honestly feel mixed feelings about the trade, I know he wanted out and his contract was a massive anchor holding the sharks back on a rebuild, but I feel like the last two seasons he has finally back to a level to be expected and now we traded him away, at least his Norris win gave the sharks some extra value from his trade

  2. Thank you Grier for cleaning up DWs biggest mistake. 13% was a hell of deal. Plus Hoffman is a shark, again 😂

  3. To be honest, I don’t know if this deal is in the top 5. The deals to get Thornton, Boyle, Burns, EK were all bigger, along with moving Ehrhoff out to get Heatley were all bigger, IMO. But those were all deals to make the Sharks better at the moment. Time will tell if this is a massive deal that makes the Sharks better a couple seasons from now… on par with moving Kipper which eventually returned Vlasic.

  4. I know some people will be sad but I’m glad he’s gone I was never in favour of the trade to bring him to San Jose and look at all of the star quality we lost over the years Tierney, Pavelski, Donskoi, Braun, Goodrow, Burns and of course most recently Meier which happened when I was back in San Jose for he first time wince COVID this year

  5. There’s still other pieces that need to play out in regards to Grandlund, Hoffman and Rutta looking forward to the deadline for now it’s more of a relief that the deal is done

  6. The minimal 1.5 mil retention is the best ''asset'' in this trade. Hopefully we can trade the other pieces for a 7th, or just give them away. That's what Grier seems to be good at these days.

  7. I don’t want EK65 to get injured again BUT if he does…..it couldn’t happen to a better team.

  8. I’m gutted. I LOVED watching EK65 play. He was poetry gliding on the ice.
We got HOSED in the trade!! We essentially got beer league players. One guy hasn’t played in the NHL since the Sharks were in the Cup Final.

  9. Pavelski,Kane, Burns, Meier, and now Karlsson. In the past 5 years we’ve gotten rid of the top scorer every year. The Sharks wouldn’t need to be going through a rebuild if the team hadn’t been mismanaged so poorly. None of the players we’ve gotten replace the points we lost. Even the 3 players traded for Karlsson won’t make up his points, even at 70%. Hasso has pledged to give away half his fortune when he dies, so I don’t think money is a motivating factor to him. People have just made stupid decisions, and like dominoes, they continue to make them. Our only hope is that Calgary is in worse shape than us so we’re not dead last.

  10. I've been impressed with Mike Grier as a GM to this point and his ability to make moves. Only retaining 13% of Karlsson's salary is a game changer for sure. I believe this franchise will be set up for long term success, and it may start happening sooner than most people think.

  11. This is one of those rare trades where everyone wins. I like this not just as a Sharks fan but as a hockey fan in general.

  12. It will help our defense no doubt, we gave up so many goals due to awful defense, hard to win close games when our alleged best defender is stuck in the offensive zone during 5 on 5 play. Great to retain 13 percent, but unfortunately we could not get a somewhat quality goalie with a decent contract as a return. Not really impressed with Kapo or Blackwood going forward.

  13. The % retention vs dumping Grandlund and Rutta's contracts is the most interesting part of this for me, a Pens fan. I think it worked out best for both teams.

A higher % retained would have cost more in picks/prospects for the Pens. And ridding ourselves of Hextall's mistake (Grandlund) just feels good.

From the Sharks side that's less 'dead money' on the books. Might even be able to turn Grandlund, Rutta and Hoffman around for more assets.

Good trade for everyone. The town is super pumped for hockey and that's saying something for Pittsburghers who are right in the middle of Steelers training camp.

  14. The 2024 First Round pick is top 10 protected. If Pittsburgh tanks and it is a top 10 pick, what do the Sharks get? 2025 First Round Pick? 2026?

  15. This is a move about the future of the team. The Sharks now have 4 picks in the first two rounds next year and a long list of players who you can move at the trade deadline. Grier is cleaning up the gigantic mess that Doug Wilson left this franchise in contract wise. The Sharks are likely a lottery team again in the next draft. The Sharks are 2-3 season away from being ready to fight for playoff spots. The bottom line is Grier is doing the massive rebuild that the Sharks needed to do 2-3 years ago.

  16. San Jose just wanted to get rid of Karlsson's contract with retaining the least amount possible. Sure, we took guys from Pittsburgh who they felt were overpaid and underperforming, for Sharks, we're not expecting to be a contender anytime soon.. It's rebuild mode. Those players acquired have team friendly contracts, 1-2 years they will either be traded for assets, for now they can contribute on the ice and help the young guys in the system. Sharks objective was to get back flexibility in the cap, which Grier did. Doug Wilson put the Sharks in a terrible position with multiple bad long term contracts, Karlsson's was the worst in the league. DW gave up quality assets for EK and he felt the pressure to make sure EK would sign long term, so DW offered what he did. Timo would still be a Shark if it wasn't for EK's contract on the books. Grier was handed the Titanic when he took the job. The Timo trade was not good for Sharks, didn't get any quality. Same with Burns. This EK trade was good.

  17. Nobody mentions that the Sharks downfall started when the sharks got Karlson, they couldn’t afford to resign Pavalski and he was the heart of the team. Bad trade even getting Carlson!!!

  18. Mike Grier has sucked since day 1. And who is responsible for the idiocracy that saw Timo Meir traded instead of trading Tomas Hertl? He better have a roster spot for William Eklund so to give long suffering Sharks fan something to look forward to.
